Hi, I have a small coin (about the size of a dime).
"Republique Francaise" on one side and a portrait of
?Bust of France? The other side of the coin says
Un Centime and rather than a date it has "L'AN 7"
It is holed but I can see what appears to be a A
beneath what I believe is the date. Can anyone translate
the date? Also would appreciate a approximate value if
anyone has that knowledge, it is holed but legible.
Thanks you very much for your help. Regards, Jim

"L'an" is French for "Year". Under the French Revolutionary calendar, Year 1 began on 22 September 1792, so revolutionary years and Gregorian years do not precisely overlap. Right now, for instance, at the end of 2009, we're just a few months into Year 218. Year 7 therefore ran from late September 1798 to late September 1799; since it's "mostly" 1799, that's usually what is given as the equivalent year. Krause calls it "1798-99".

As for value, the hole will probably bring it right down. It catalogues at $3 in Fine in my 2002 edition Krause.

Thank you for the additional info. The knowledge you get from
researching these coins is fun. I bought 100 foreign coins from
ebay and have had lots of hours of enjoyment with them. I asked
the value of this one because a guy from Dublin Ireland has one on
ebay for $60.00. His is a 1797 but seemed to be close enough.
I don't think I would sell any of what I have. Maybe, but probably
not. Thanks again for you help. Jim

The A stands for the Paris Mintmark.

Condition is everything on French revolutionary coinage. For a common An 7, the price ranges from 6 euros in G to 120 euros in UNC. If you want to compare yours with photos of graded ones, go to cgb.fr.

There are also uncommon varieties: 7/6 overstrikes, as well as strikes with unusual numbers of pearls along the coin edge. All of these sell for considerably more than 6 euros.
