A friend of mine is leaving on a cruise soon.
He and his wife will be going to St. Thomas, St. Martin and Grand Turk.
My knowledge of these locals and their coinage is waaayyyy beyond me.

St. Thomas is a U.S. Virgin Island Territory so they use USA coinage.

My questions:
Do the other two use French or British coinage?
Would it be worth it to give him some cash to bring some back?
I know some countries sell proof sets at banks (i.e. China) is it the same in these areas?

Any info and / or discussion would help.

Thanks.

St Martin is divided into two, by France (northern half) and the Netherlands (southern half). The French half officially uses euros, just like they do in mainland France. The Dutch half uses the Netherlands Antilles guilder, though euros and US dollars are probably accepted in both halves of the island as well.

Grand Turk is part of the British territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands. US currency is now the recognised legal tender on the islands, though NCLT coins are made; hopefully at least some of these coins would be available for sale in the islands themselves, rather than just from the Pobjoy Mint or wherever made them. Back in the 1980's, some local coins denominated in "crowns" (1 crown = 1 US dollar) were struck, apparently for circulation. At least, I once found in a dealer's scratchtray a Turks & Caicos quarter-crown that looked heavily circulated.

Forgot to add: the Netherlands Antilles is scheduled to be dissolved as a single political entity in October 2010, and the currency will quite likely be abolished in the near future. This may (or may not) make their coins and notes more interesting for you to collect.

I have several suggestions.
1. Just go with them.
2. Wait till they get there and have them call you about the currency.
3. Give them lots and lots of money so they can really enjoy their trip and bring you what is left over in the monitary system of those places.
4. Have them adopt you and go as a relative. Might get a discout.

Excellent ideas Carl.

I have decided to stow away in their luggage.

Anybody else have any input as to what to have them look for and anything about proof sets?

I just got back from a similar cruise. Picked up a neat Virgin Islands gift set in St. Croix and some "Eastern Caribbean" currency from St. Lucia.

I also got a bunch of Puerto Rico quarters and picked up some rolls of the 4th 2009 penny in the San Juan airport.

Pretty much everyone accepts US$, even if they have their own currency.

I looked for pirate/collectible coins and all were junk/highly priced.
