"Ain't"? You have Bison in your back yard in that part of the Country? I've seen them in Yellowstone and ofcourse, MANY in Colorado. Grumpy looking critters. Buffalo burgers are good! As for the coin, I haven't seen one but, I know folks that have them. Mine, unfortunately, all have four legs.
Sorry sn31. I had to pick on you a little bit.

I don't think of Oklahoma as a land of Buffalo. It's been years since I've been in that part of the Country. (Ofcourse, I won't let you down!)
Off hand, I don't know how many 3-legged ones have been discovered. Anyone else have an idea for sn31?

Oh yes, lots and lots of Buffalo. The stuffed one I mentioned has been preserved in our museum since I was alittle girl.Actually it some how got out of the bullpins and got hit by a vehicle,it was kept because it was an exceptionally large one. It's one of the first things I look for when I revisit our museum.Next time your down this way hollar at me,so much indian history.Fort Sill was actually the place where Geranamo was held, that's 30 minutes from where I live. There is also Indian city, the Chisolm trail, and other places I believe you would take an interest in,as you seem to like history as much as I do.sn31.

Well I am sure there are a great number of forum members waiting for me to weigh in on this one! The 3 legged Buffalo nickel can be found IF you have very deep pockets. I might point out there are plenty of counterfeits out there so one really needs to know what he/she is doing before laying down their hard earned cash for such a coin. To be safe with such a "key" buying a slabbed coin might be in your best interest. The 3 legged buffalo, in lower grades, could be bought for around $250.00 only 6 to 8 years ago but those prices have now about doubled since I bought my last one. I have started another Indian/Buffalo album and have been working it for quite some time and I am down to about 7 empty holes and the 3 legged buffalo is one of them in this new book. Unless I discover a really great buy I don't anticipate filling that hole at this time. You would probably be financially better off to look for the 2005 "Speared Bison" as quite honestly I think there will be a time, down the road, where they will exceed the value of the 3 legged Buffalo nickel as I don't believe there are as many of them out there! Time will tell! One last point I would make is take the time to watch ebay and get a feel for how many coins are currently for sale, what they are going for and whether or not they are slabbed and most importantly BE PATIENT! Good luck!

We live in western Colorado, and there are many places you can drive to in order to gaze at the mangy creatures. In my younger days I always had Buffalo nickels in my pocket change. Now, it has been years since I have seen one in circulation.

Howdy there sn31, and hows it going down there in the nations? From that part of Oklahoma I would guess that the Kiowa keep a few of the animals around to show the tourist when they stop. We had a few around these parts until crystalk started gathering them up for himself. He gave you some very good advice and the olny thing that he left out is that even more important than finding such a coin, is haveing it certifed as authentic before buying. These coins can be found all over with the leg removed to try and fool the novice collector. Be very careful when selecting the one you want. Oh ya! When you get around to traveling up into Wyoming, we will feed you a Buffalo burger or a steak, take you choice.

Hello again sn31. If you're interested in learning more about the 1937-D 3-legged Buffalo nickel, I have posted a spotlight review on the coin, which you can find here: http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.c...l-coins.htmlYou'll find information on how the 3-legged variety came into being, value trend histories, plus a glimpse of what was happening in the world in the year 1937. A great thing for owners of a genuine 3-legged Buffalo is that it has shown a tendancy to gallop higher and higher in value over time. Not bad for a 3-legged critter!
