As my visit to my first pawn shop coin dealer (I've only dealt with flea markets so far) nears what coins should I ask him about. Morgan silver dollar wise. What are coins that arent to expensive and are good for someone starting out. Or should I buy what appeals to me?

Hi coolg
Its always best to be selective in your purchases,, The Morgans that you have now what are the dates and approx grades ?
If you want to continue with your collection as it now stands, then select a date or Mint mark or two that fits with what you have now, when you see what coins are available try and match grades with your existing coins .
But be well prepared before hand on what the current values are for the coins your looking for, and dont give in to being in a hurry!!! If your coin is not there, dont buy another just for the sake of buying one !!!
coin collections take years to put togther, and there will always be another of most coins come along.

coolg Do you have a RedBook ? if not then probly your best investment in your collection right now would be one. They are about 14 or 15.00 ,, Morgans have had some significant price increases in the last couple of years,, you might want to check it out and maybe pick another series that is better suited to a tight budget !! add the Morgan dollars as you can but stay active in collecting with Roosevelt dimes or Jefferson nickels. By all means, buy what appeals to you. However, it's imperative that you have a good feel for the value of the coins you're looking at, because you'll end up disappointed if you bring a nice coin here only to have someone tell you it cost twice what it's worth.
That's the First Rule of coin collecting - know what you're buying.

I agree with metalman. if your budget is tight you might want to think of a series that is cheaper. Morgan are great looking but after you get your first dozen after that they will start getting pricey and it may make you mad if you can not get any and make you stop collection. there are a lot of coin that might be cheaper to collect. Also make sure to take a price guide or at least write down soem of the prices you know and can afford that way you do not get taking advantage of. One set you might want to look at if you want a older set to collect it the Mercury dime if the pawn shop has them. they are fairly inexpence to collect them there are only a few that are expensive the others are very affordable. or Buffalo nickels whould be another. but if your love adn passion is morgans then plan on saving money for each coin and get nice ones. Just remember don't be in a hurry and have fun. also is the pawn shop the only coin shop close to you

The most affordable Morgans are the 1921's, but they aren't really the best of the series. Most I've seen have had weak strikes compared to the earlier ones (same problem with Peace dollars). I think the 1878 Morgans are the most interesting.

1878 definately has alot of varieties, but if you are a collector of varieties with limited funds then the 1921 is a great place to start because they have their share of them also

the ASE set is a great one to do as well. you can ussally get them for 2-3 above spot price depending on the year I would say the best why to start on this set is start with the 2006 and work your way back and Nickels and dimes are a great way to go.

Do what I do ask him what he has in stock first and everything from there should work out smoothly. When I went to my first coin dealer he was very happy because he hasn't seen a young collecter like me in a while so if the pawn shop owner is into coins he would be glad to see you
