I've been considering getting a tripod after I get my new camera, but I was wondering, do you have to put the coin upright in order to take pictures of it, or is there a way to take pictures of a coin that is laying down with a tripod?

Any tripod will let you get the camera vertical. This was my high-tech () workstation, a couple years ago:

I have a small table tripod not one of those cheapo ones but a pretty nice one. Even on the cheap ones you can usually turn the camera where its facing downward but be sure it can handle the weight of the camera without tipping over

What he is referring to is that the telephoto lens, usually weighs more than the camera!. Note picture SuperDave has posted.
