How do you like the SD780IS so far? It always takes some experimentation to dial in a technique that works for you, and I'm still working on mine. Looking at the exif data for the images, I see you shot at 1/6 second--pretty good if hand-held. I'd use brighter lighting and try to get the camera more perpendicular to the coin--that will help sharpness.

Thanks for the advice DV. It really is a great camera, much better than my old one. One question though. I just used the auto mode on my pics, is that macro?

Your model might switch to "macro" when shooting close subjects in auto. But, I think you also have a dedicated macro setting. On the back, there is a 4-way circular button with a little tulip flower. That's the standard macro icon. Pressing the button near that icon would probably activate macro--your manual might say more. Have fun with that--I'm sure you'll get some really sharp coin shots!

Ok, I figured it out, thanks for all your advice. Also, I saw how you combined both the obverse and reverse into one picture, and I was wondering how you do that. I was sure I have Photopshop, but I can't find it. Are there any sites that'll let you do that? Thanks.

I've always used PS, but I know others here who really like GIMP. It's a Windows program and I think it's free to download. I should do some more articles on PS techniques, such as bringing obv/reverse photos into one file. Here's one I did on sharpening techniques.

Wow, nice method. I'll try GIMP and maybe some other websites, thanks for the help.

I just read the exif data, which shows the setting on your camera. Here's a useful plugin for Firefox. Was this a hand-held shot? Since exposure is 1/10 of a second and 800 ISO, I bet you need to increase lighting. With more light, your camera will automatically step down to a shorter shutter speed, thereby reducing camera shake. I find that I don't need to use a tripod with shutter settings 1/80 or faster.

More light and tripod will allow lower ISO settings. The lower ISO will give sharper results.
My daughter has this camera and uses it in low light situations with hi ISO settings no flash. Works great, when you can't use a flash, however grainy pics.

DV, when you domore articles, I will be one of your avid readers. I just found that there are many things one can do with PS, beside overlays!

Hmmm.... strange I can't seem to download it. Is this any better? I tried to use more lighting but when I use too much I get too much glare. Are these any better?

So what do you think about your latest photo...better? I think that's pretty good for 1/20 second hand-held. I can see some blur, which is due to the long shutter. You'll need to play around with lighting and settings I think. To reduce glare, I would manually underexpose by 1/3-2/3 stop--your camera has this feature. Macro shots are tricky--I've forgotten that because it's a hobby of mine. Often, whatever the camera doesn't do right can be adjusted in photoshop. Here's what a little contrast adjustment and sharpening does:
