If you're considering an economical solution for coin photography, look at what a Canon SD790IS can do in macro mode (hand-held). Not too shabby for a $150 camera. As a point of reference, the size of the date is similar to an IHC.

G'day, Very good pics.

- I suggest that you invest in a small tripod.

Thanks Peter!
I have a good tripod, but this worked well enough.

That's a decent shot through a jeweler's loupe!
Here's another coin I shot today that shows how the SD790IS captures detail. Hand-held again, with a single light source.

The pictures are great, and I especially like the details: 6/5, and the 190/1905e, 5/4

Dick,
Thanks--it's not bad considering the size of the digits--a little smaller than on an IHC.

I paid $25.00 (including shipping) for my JVC GC-QX3HD about 7 years ago and it can do very well in macro mode without a tripod also
