I moved to the UP 3 years ago. My first summer here I found what I thought was an 1878 US Trade dollar in lake superior. This morning I dropped it and to my surprise one side popped off! Inside I found that the coin is hinged and has a circle of glass (broken of course) inside like a locket would. I'm just looking to see if anyone knows anything about this type of counterfeit coin or where I can get more information on it.

Hi Wolfe_mandi

and

I have never heard of this before, but did a couple google searches after reading your story. What you have may not be a counterfeit, it sounds like it could be a "box dollar" or "opium dollar". From what some have posted on the likes of Wiki answers, this could be worth around $300. I am sure I speak for all when I say

Did you find it metal detecting or just a lucky find on the beach? I live in the LP, wondering how many non Michiganders will know what the UP is.

Thanks for sharing your story...I am looking forward to see if anyone else can give you some more info. Sounds like a very cool find.

Ken

Here is a link to a Morgan dollar that sounds like what wolfe_mandi may be talking about. Pretty cool. Yeah, being from Canada, I had to look up "UP" too, but figured it out .

LP - Lower Peninsula
UP - Upper Peninsula; inhabitants are called "Yoopers"

There is also a music group called "Da Yoopers" who are quite prolific; some of their music (which extols the travails and joys of living in the UP) can be heard on Youtube. It is sung in a mock Norwegian accent, and is reminiscent of the novelty songs of Yogi Yorgesson (who was from Minnesota, and sang in a mock Swedish accent).

There are others; search for them there also, they are all very funny.

Ok... link to pics above. It is a photo locket, just like the Morgan except Lake Superior was not kind to my Trade dollar. When I did the original post I didn't even think about anyone having to look up the UP...lol. Interestingly enough I was looking at slag on a friend's private beach I crashed when I looked down and saw a perfectly round something that stood out like a sore thumb. It was the coin/locket. It is not bent as it appears in the pic. Unfortunately the angle that made a good pic for the details cast a funny shadow.

Does anyone have any tips on cleaning this up without damaging it?

I have only seen one coin like this and I think it was a Seated dollar. It was in an estate sale and I really liked it but they had allot of other things I wanted more so I didn't get it but they are made pretty well and if you didn't know it was a locket you wouldn't know by looking at it. I thought they were pretty cool and definitely isn't something you see every day

I've been thinking about this all afternoon... I know you could lathe the two pieces from 2 separate coins, but finding the hinge... Very cool piece.

yeah I don't know how they did these things when they were made but the one I saw you couldnt even tell it wasn't a real coin until it was opened. I don't know when they were made but the one I saw looked to be real old like turn of the 20th century old

Chequer: I love the Morgan dollar you found. I think it would be interesting if I show one to my coin club. However, I don't think I will afford $400 for this coin.

@dollarcoins I love it too. It's an amazing piece of work ... very intricate. I wonder how many of those are around.
