I'm just wondering what, if anything, you tell your bank when you ask for rolls? Most of my local banks are pretty small and when I ask for even a few rolls of coins thay ask me why I need that many. Hate to think what they would say if I asked for a box.

I usually just say I collect them and they give me strange "you nerd" looks. It's always worked though, tellers always seem happy to get rid of half dollars.

I just tell them the truth also. "I like to look through the rolls and take out the best ones for my nieces and nephews so they get the best ones". And it is true, at some point when I'm dead they will get them! They never give me any problems after that! In fact, I have a few different banks that call me when they get rolls from customers.

Ok, I have just been telling them that the kids and I collect coins. I was worried that at some point they might start giving me a hard time about it.

I live in a small town with small banks. I never find half dollars from two local banks. :( I always take my two boys with me to the bank. I proclaim that the coins are for my boys. :)

I'm always honest when they ask, but my banks all know me now by first name. When I walk in they ask "another box of pennies"? LOL They're usually shocked when I don't want one and I'm just there for normal business.
On another note, some banks are nasty about selling coinage. I've read some stories on this forum. If it's one of those types of banks, I'd tell them you have a business and require coinage to make change. Just make sure you use a different dump bank.

Same as above .....
Be polite ...... tell the truth ..... bring along some Christmas cookies ..... etc.
All of my banks know when I walk in the door that I'm looking for nickels ..... so they see me and head to the vault for another box.
I tell them Thanks and so it goes ...... roll searching.

Tellers around here are always happy to get rid of change. It makes their drawer lighter and easier for them to count at the end of the day. I ask for hand rolled coins. Not boxes..though I have had good luck in boxes, it seems people are digging into stashes of coins that have been left untouched for years. jmho.

I am in a major metro area where there are banks on every corner. When I go into a new bank and they ask why I want so many coins I tell them "My Business" which is true, its my business why I want the conis not theirs. This seems to satify the question. In other banks I frequent, the tellers have standing orders for me know that I collect. I dont try to hid it from them since they see the volume I do on a weekly basis.

I get my boxes (pennies, nickels) from a branch of a regional bank. They never blink an eye. They don't generally have any rolls of halves, though. When they do get some, one of the tellers calls us at home (did I say we live in a smallish town ) Last week, they called because they had $7.50 cents in halves! Unfortunately, no silver though

The tellers that ask are probably just genuinely curious. Take it as a good sign that you're the only roll searcher in town. Tell the truth and come in regularly to pick up a box or just do business. Most banks are happy to give away rolled coins. Take all your rejects to a different bank though. In a couple of months, you might find them holding interesting coins or bills for you.

I've always been honest with 'em. I've even had a few bank employees tell me that I shouldn't buy their customer-wrapped rolls...because they've been "dumped" there by another roll searcher. Delivering a dozen fresh doughnuts on a Saturday morning doesn't hurt either. ;)

I've worked in banks all my life, most of the time managing the tellers. If a teller gets a coin in other than the standard penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and small dollar - they don't want it. It doesn't fit in their coin tray and they find it annoying to count everyday. We prefer to give you handrolled coins from other customers. Most banks opperate under the honor system with these coins so we don't really know if a roll is a coin short or a coin over. The only concern we have is that they are very close and don't contain dummies. So we're glad to get rid of the handrolled. Most of the time I'll walk by and notice something odd in their coin tray. I'm quick to grab it. My biggest find was 12 pounds of Franklin and 64's We have some regular customers come in and ask if we have any "odd coins". Others come in on a weekly basis and buy boxes. I'm happy to accomodate people who want full boxes provided the following 1. We come to an agreement that you tell me in advance so I can order them and we stick to that scheduale. I'm not going to drain my supply nor am I going to hang on to extras when you don't show up for several weeks. 2.I don't want to see these things again. You're not going to buy a box of coins, go through them, and show back up next week with 99% of them handrolled. I'm just not dealing with that...

Kids are the best excuse and I find that most people will jump right to it for you. The only problem is that my kids quit after 2 minutes and want dad to do it all. As long as you are honest then there is nothing to worry about. Also, be POLITE, if you are rude then you better find a new bank, a little thanks and nice comments go a long way.
