From one newbie to another, all I know is that RD is red (shiny copper), BN is brown (dull, toned copper), and RB is red-brown. I read somewhere that grading companies only grade a coin RB if it is mostly red, but not completely. In other words, a brown coin with just some parts that are red wouldn't be graded as RB.

Also, I'm pretty sure that coins that are toned beautiful rainbow colors are graded as BN (even though they aren't actually brown in color.)

(I really hope I'm right, but please correct me if I'm not.)

The color also helps a lot with price and grade as well. You do NOT want a current Lincoln that is brown, but a Wheat is just fine. The Wheat's are more difficult to find (in circulation) and their value will go up accordingly. When it comes to the key and semi-key dates, most people are happy to have them no matter the color, but the newer the coin, the more red is desired. If you look around at the board you will notice that most people here try to have from about 1930 to current as bright reds and slowly working backwards on the others. Being red does make it more desirable to most but there are some that do like the well used look as well, either way, we like them all.

It's obviously a matter of opinion also. Some people submit older wheats and large cents for grading hoping to get the RD but only get RB. The RD will up the value a lot on the older coins and people will sometimes re-submit to the same company or different companies to try to get it. It's worth the money if you can get it, but a waste of money if you don't!

Exactly how I did it! Some will go with 1909 to 1934 all brown then 1935 to current all red.

Typically, the guidelines that grading services use are the following-

RD= 95-100% red
RB= 5-95% red
BN= 0-5% red

In my Dansco 8100 I went with Wheats all brown and Memorials all red so there's uniformity among coin types. It came with it's own challenges, though. Like finding high grade 50's cents that are all brown.
