First, I never clean my coins, but I really need to remove some debris from this coin to check the mintmark. Need your suggestions on how to approach this job. Which would work best: olive oil; xylene; acetone; toluene or something else.

I've added some pictures of the coins including several of the date and mintmark. The closeups are from various light angles.

What do you need to do with the mintmark?

Looks like an RPM on the mintmark. But I think after cleaning the date and mintmark, it'll be just Machine Doubling. Right now you can't see the metal and flowlines.

I soak'em in acetone all the time. Usually a couple hours helps if it's going to help at all.

I don't think it's a RPM. I suggest cleaning from the mildest method first, soap and water and then move on to more harsh methods. Good luck.

Let me say that I do not recommend cleaning coins. This coin is worth 1 cent prior to cleaning and will be worth the same after I finish. I am trying to get a better view of specific features that are hidden.

Here's some pictures of the coin after a wash with water and soap.

I was very surprised and pleased with the results. I'm planning on more torture of the coin next week in my lab with other solvents. If there's interest I will post pictures.
