Doing a little inventoring this morning and I have a question. I have a 1963 set of coins. It is a tan envelope with Treasury Department United States Mint, Philadelphia Pa. in the upper left corner. Inside there a set of coins and a mint marker. A card inside says Your Proof Coins, my question is..

Is this a proof set or a mint set.

I have proof sets that are in a box with a plastic box inside holding the coins. I know they are proof sets but I am confused about these envelopes. Thanks,

The mint sets have a blue or a red stripe
along the edge of the cellophane, the proof set
does not.

I do not know a lot about the pre-1968 proofs since I do not collect them, but this should be a proof set. They did not start using the solid plastic holders for proof sets until 1968.

Sounds like a proof set to me. The Philadelphia mint marker was in the proof sets as well. Below is a link to a set on ebay you can compare yours to.

Thats exactly what it looks like. The red and blue strip will help me remember also. I also noticed that my mint sets have two sets of coins in the envelope, one red striped and one blue striped. Thanks for all the replies.

Also the markers in the mint set and proof sets were different. The proof set has a broad foil-like seal as in the set in the link captainkurt posted, while the mint sets have a round gray plastic disk with the mint letter on them. This is only a problem from 1959 to 63 because that is the only period when both the mint and proof sets came in the pliofilm holders.

I think the paper envelopes on the proof sets have something like 1963 PC and the mint sets have 1963 UC

I got to thinking about this reply, is there two sets of coins in each envelope because of different mint marks?

I collect Proof sets and Mint sets, Gibby3 said it all, also if the set is out of the envelope, you can tell the difference by the coins, mirror like or business strike, and a Mint set gave you more than 1-cent, also the proof sets were packaged differently in the mid-50's the coins were in a small cardboard box and all coins were in single "cells" of cello packages, held together with one staple, usually the older the set, the more delicate the wrapper. I believe this style packaging started in 1947, and ended in 1955, be well, Mike...
