I attended the FUN show in Orlando today.
Better weather this year than last.

I enjoyed it and picked out a few treasures for my grandson and for myself.

The show seemed less attended by both dealers and buyers this year compared to last.
The show is still Free but the parking cost $11.00 and unless you are from this area you will be paying high season rates for rooms in Orlando.

I found many dealers who last year were too busy to talk with me had time this year. Almost everyone I spoke with was willing to "deal" on price.

There were also some new dealers at this years show who were willing to work with the buyers.

I was most impressed with Gainesville Coins.

The Bureau of Printing and Engraving puts on a great show.

I had the opportunity and enjoyed panning for Gold at the Gold History Corporation's booth.

They had the facilities set up which allowed them to teach us to pan for gold. some attendees found some, and some did not.

I was a lucky one and found two flakes in my pan. They give them to you to take home in a vial of distilled water. Nice novelty item.

An old forum member was there -Trader Nick he apologizes for his absence from the forum but he now has two coin stores his newest one in Orlando which takes up most of his time.

The most impressive item I saw was the CP16 CoinAnalyzer

Quote:
The CP16 Coin Analyzer™ scans each coin, finding the unique characteristics of that coin and storing them in a CoinPrint™ ID file similar to a fingerprint file. An individualized serial number is added to this identification record.

This CoinPrint™ is stored in a central database, enabling future identification of the coin by its own unique characteristics. Once identified, the linked serial number and image files may be retrieved.

This affords new market opportunities:

* Creating ownership records
* Reducing insurance premiums
* Providing counterfeit & fraud protection
* Advanced quality control information
* Added value by creating serialized coins

Coins become more like numbered lithographs, which directly carry their serial number within the art itself. The coins can be scanned and have the serial numbers verified at time of purchase or sale with distributed units at coin dealers and elsewhere. This is a great improvement over current practices, such as adding a small paper certificate which is not secure and can easily be separated, lost or fraudulently duplicated.

Additionally, the system produces a digital image of the coin at the time of scanning. This digital image is also stored in the database along with the CoinPrintTM, adding extra system value and secondary identification. The imaging system has a computerized illumination component, consisting of a ring of 48 LEDs, each individually controlled. This allows a custom illumination pattern to be optimized for each coin and stored in the system for use whenever the same type of coin is scanned.

* The ability to digitally fingerprint each coin and store the identity in a central database that can be remotely searched on a one-to-many basis offers a powerful tool to help reduce fraud, theft and loss on a worldwide basis
* The speed of the one-to-many search algorithm allows thousands of comparisons a second, far beyond any current method of cataloging collectable coins
* The registration of gold and silver bullion coins can provide a safeguard worthy of reductions in insurance premiums for holding precious metals
* A historic pedigree of each registered coin can be created allowing ownership records of key coins to be traced for future generations of collectors

While this may good for identifying stolen coins , the device runs US$4500.00 a little rich for my blood.
(you can visit their website but I'll let you search for it-

I thought over the last two years the seminars were more plentiful and of more interest to me than what I saw this year.- but this may be because I have attended for the last 5 years in a row.

This year the Summer FUN show will not be in West Palm Beach but in Orlando.

and next years FUN Convention will be in TAMPA with the 2012 show moving back to Orlando.

This is a show everyone should attend at least once.
If all works out I hope to bring my grandson to the 2012 show.

I would love to go to a mega-show like that sometime. The biggest I have been to was a Central States Numismatic Society convention and that only had about 175 dealers.

From my count in the catalog - program
There were only 532 vendors at this show

That ought to keep you busy for a while!

That is definitely a big show, it must take quite some time to visit all the vendors, did you go on multiple days or just one?

I have never been to any coin show but hoping to go to the Whitman Coin Expo in March, is this anywhere as large as this FUN show?

I've been to some rather large coin shows but not that one. I also go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a Month in my area. From what I've found over the many years of doing this is the larger the show, the more the prices of the coins. It really makes CENTS too. Since most of the dealers come from all over, they too have to pay for transportation, lodging, food, high table rentals, etc so they have to tack that on to the prices of their coins. Then too, even the customers usually end up paying more in parking, lodgings, food and in some areas entrance fees.
The standard coin shows in my area are free admission, free parking, most dealers come from the area so less costs for them, lower table rentals, etc. Therefore usually, not always, lower prices on coins.
