Every bank note in the UK is contaminated with cocaine within weeks of entering circulation, experts have revealed.

Police have stopped testing notes for traces of the drug in criminal investigations as the contamination is so widespread.

According to the Forensic Science Service the results are now meaningless as every note tests positive for cocaine.

Does this mean I am at risk for "drug possession" on the short walk from the ATM machine to the bank teller when I am getting bags of coins to search?

I think it depends on how big your wad of cash is. It would take a lot of notes to make enough cocaine to warrant getting arrested for possession. Now the Securicor guys delivering the bank boxes of notes to the high street banks may be a different story....

From article:
An average bank note may pass through dozens of hands and only a minute amount of cocaine needs to be present for a positive test result.

It's largely the fault of advances in chemical testing technology. A few molecules is now all you need for a "positive test", and a few molecules can easily be picked up by a note just touching or being stacked with a genuinely "contaminated" note.

New bank teller risk: numbed fingers from counting cocaine-tainted money.
