This item is listed as a 1870S Seated Liberty half dollar WITH NO DRAPERY. It was my understanding the "no drapery" pertained to only the 1839 SLHalf and the 1845O SLHalf. I haven't heard of any other year/mints that had a "no drapery" condition.

Am I wrong? Is this guy blowing smoke?

Here's the message I sent him:

A word to the wise: The "Drapery" and "No Drapery" versions had two major differences, not one. In addition to the difference in drapery at the elbow, the rock upon which Liberty sits is very different between the two types - the Drapery version having a very much smaller rock. In fact, this is the attribute used to identify well-worn examples, as it's an easier feature to see.

The coin you offer has the "Drapery" rock. It's been altered to remove the drapery. I'm not accusing you of deliberate deception - your record is far too good to believe you'd risk it over one coin - but there's not a chance that this coin is a genuine, unaltered "No Drapery" type of any year.

This all confirms what I was thinking.

Background: Initially this auction did not have any pictures. Since my 1870S SL Half has an unfortunate knob of metal in the middle of it, I was looking to replace it. I emailed this seller to tell him there was no way I would bid on a coin without pictures. He then posted the ones on the auction.

While I agree the seller has good feedback, the fact that he originally did NOT have pictures and that the fact he should (most likely) have known better that the 1870S SL Half did NOT have an "no drapery" type makes me a bit suspicious about this seller...

The 1839 half is a slightly different design that does not have drapery at the elbow and a different shape to the rock. The 45-O half is also known to come with no drapery and the regular rock. But if you look in the RedBook you will find an explaination. The drapery was removed due to excesive polishing of the die. Well they don't show up in the RedBook but dies clashed every year at every mint and in some cases polishing done removes that drapery since it is one of the lowest relief areas on the obv die. No there aren't no drapery varieties known for every year, but they do exist on a maderate number of years and mints. Frankly the only reason the 45-O is in the RedBook is because it is the most commonly encountered one.

After looking at the pictures he posted I would say that he has a partial drapery variety. Most of the drapery is missing but the area closest to the body does still appear to be visible. The coin is legitimate, just a polished die that has removed most of the drapery.
