I thought the mint never put a living person on a coin (other the current king or queen). What is the deal with the Cindy Klaussen 25 cent coin ? This commentary is not meant to diminish her great accomplishments in any way, but is just an observation.

We have seen the Terry Fox dollar loonie 24 years after his death and the 1909-2009 Canadians hockey loonie.

I guess the other issue that comes to mind, what are other athletes and their fans thinking ? I am sure many are thinking why don't we have coins commerating other great Canadian athletes like Wayne Gretsky, Maurice Richard, the 1972 Canadian hockey team (who defeated the Russians), etc. ?

Personally I don't think it sets a good precedent and she should not have her own coin. There was a Commemorative silver dollar minted in 1997 celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Summit Series.

Chrycopaul, thanks for posting the photo of the 1972-1997 coin.
It is a real nice coin.

I don't get this one myself. She is a great skater with three world records, six Olympic medals, and is a two time World Allaround Champion, but she is only 30 years old and still an active speed skater and would be deserving of a Commemorative at a much later date in my opinion.

Chrycopaul & Tim,

I agree with both of you. I don't think Cindy Claussen will ever come close to someone like Terry Fox, who despite being in severe pain from late stages of cancer, chose to walk across Canada before he died on an artifical limb and raised millions for cancer research and saved countless people with his efforts.

The RCM asked the public to vote on their favourite olympic moments. Men's Hockey Gold was #1, Women's Hockey Gold #2 and Cindy Klassen's unprecedented five medals at the Turin Games in 2006 was number 3. Thats why she got a coin.
