Here is another of the valuable contemporary circulating counterfeits that appear on ebay periodically. It proves that not all counterfeits are worthless. The high bidder in this case is a friend of mine who is a specialist in the Bank of England forgeries. This coin was most likely made at Birmingham between 1796 and 1810. It is a Sheffield plate - a sandwich of silver over copper. Unlike an electroplate - the silver layer in this case is part of the planchet which is struck. The technology was used from roughly 1770 to 1840. It was replaced by electroplating.

I've often wanted a authentic example of one of these c/m pieces.

The real ones are worth more than most of the counterfeit varieties. I got three of them when I first started collecting but switched over the more interesting forged varieties about 12 years ago.

The ones with the octagonal counterstamps are more valuable still. I only have one of those and it is real. I bought it from Bowers and Marina years ago.

nice!

Post pictures, please... I would LOVE to see them.

I find the countermarked / counterstamped examples of the spanish colonial pieces to be very pleasing. To me, it sort of brings in the history of the coin - there it is, right in your hand.

I even find the asian chopmarks can be interesting.
