Here's the deal...
Doubling would have to be a secondary image of something else near by on the same side of the coin. There's nothing in that area of the reverse of the cent with that shape, so there's nothing this could be 'doubling' of....so a doubled die is out. The next logical choice would be a die clash. So if you note the area of the coin and flip it over and look at the part exactly opposite that area you'll find Lincoln's throat. The shape of the throat is exactly opposite the shape on the reverse, so this must be where the mark on the reverse comes from. You have a die clash!
