A friend on mine found this note while remodeling the old Hudson Bay building in the late 1960's...Bottom picture is darkened to show the date abit better. Notice how they spelled Quesnel in those days.

Probably an Anglicized version of the Indian pronounciation, I'm guessing.

hhbkiddo..great question.. WpgLwr great guess...

The Quesnel River was discovered by Jules Maurice Quesnel when he rode the river with Simon Fraser to Quesnel lake.

The early maps and the town site of the forks were spelled Quesnelle by the surveyor and townsite planner. In June of 1900 the spelling was changed to Quesnel. This is a great reference to date an item regarding Quesnelle or Quesnel ( Pre or Post )

Here is a copy of the partial townsite of Quesnell Forks in 1893...

Depending on the circumstances, the $5.00 could have been quite a grubstake or a half dozen eggs.

I would further document the provenance.

Any guesses as to value? I would say north of 54.40.

For all the non believers this note is authentic. It has been documented along time ago as is listed in the BC Archives as Q5100d. I have darkened the pictures on purpose to try and high light the date for everyone to see which automatically changed the normal color.

Parklane64, it does have alot of value ( 4 - 5 figure range) as it to my knowledge is the only one known to exist that has the phrase "Supply Bearer $5.00 In Goods.

Other known examples are like this blue HB Co Note:

This note will be donated to the Quesnel Museum in the future..
Speaking with my friend, This scarce Hudson Bay note lived its life in the old Hudson Bay Building and we have come to the conclusion this should remain in the Cariboo Region Quesnel Museum for future generations to have the opportunity to view and enjoy.
