I just bought a Cherry Pickers Guide because I got picked at my table the other day but fortunately the guy was nice enough to tell me after I sold him the coin so I just take it as a lesson learned. My question is, I have seen them on line and they had color pictures. I bought one from the supplier and didn't even open it. Just bought it, and put it with my stuff. I looked at it last night and the pictures are black and white. Is this normal or did I buy a black and white version.

I used to tell the dealers when I cherry picked. I also used to tell them the reference books they needed to find the info. For the most part it worked in my favor as a lot of the local dealers would call me if they had a coin in they knew I would like. The down side was that prices went up. So I stopped with the new dealers. Its a mute point now as the guy that organized all the local shows has dropped off the face of the planet and no one has stepped up to the plate and taken over. I'm down to 4 shows a year instead of about 1 a month...

I have no problem telling you what he picked from me. It was a 1961 D (repunched mintmark) LWC. (it is on page 132 in the 5th ed of Cherry Pickers Guide)It only cost me about $9, so I'm not really upset about it. I was just thankful that it was not a $2000 mistake. As a small time dealer (shows only) I cant afford to be making costly mistakes.

Can someone explain why the latest 5th edition comes in Volume 1 and 2? Which edition do we buy if we want everything from cent to dollar in one book?
Thank you.

Wonder if I can ask a question. New to the hobby, all you members are teaching me a lot. What is a Cherry Picker guide? What is it used for?

The Cherry Pickers Guide is a reference book with lots and lots of varieties, double dies, repunched dates or mintmarks, etc. listed in it. The phrase cherry picker is that some collectors will go to their dealer and sift through their inventory, cherry picking the coins that are more valuable than the dealer realizes.

If I was to pick one of those up and sit down and study it, I could go to the local coin show and go on a treasure hunt of some sort! Where would I find one of those - from a dealer or maybe online? Thanks for your help Rustyboy! Still learning!!

Does it make dealers uncomfortable when you sit down at their table with one of these books?

It doesn't make a dealer uncomfortable unless he is upset at himself for not knowing better. ALTHOUGH, I do not put prices on my coins. I tell you the price once you ask about it because the price is not set in stone. Although, if you sit down at my table with a Cherry Pickers Guide and then ask about a particular coin, you better believe that I'm going to take a closer look at coin before I tell you a price. I think your best to decide on a few coins your interested in and learn what to look for and leave the book at home.
