A friend of mine had stated that he was going to the bank to get rolls of coins, sort through them and see what he could find. Have any of you done this? What is the success rate?

All the time. Its the main way I collect. Its called coin roll hunting (CRH for short) and yes you do find some good stuff. They key is volume which involves a lot of dumping (getting rid of coins you have sorted) so the best bet is to find a bank with a free coin machine. Sometimes you get lucky and find really old stuff but mainly I search for silver and modern errors. Good luck!

I like to do occational roll hunting, and I find that the small towns have a better god coin ratio, probably b/c not as many fellow collectors are in that town and allow some good things to still float around..like silver

It's well worth you're time, even if you get skunked once and a while.

This form of "treasure hunting" is a pure pleasure....."when" you find something !
But just be prepared to stay consistent and have the patience of a God !
Sometimes you'll score a lot of Silver and/or different countries and/or older coins like Buffalo's or V nickels.....searching Halves can net you some Franklins....Walking Liberty's.... 90% or 40% Silver Kennedy's....etc.etc.......Indian Head Cents can be found searching Lincoln rolls......Wheat heads, etc. etc. etc.
But the "KEY THING" or "advice" is patience when roll hunting ANY denomination........because you will undoubtedly have stretches (of possibly hundreds/thousands of dollars depending on the particular denomination you're searching) where you find LITTLE TO NOTHING INTERESTING ! You can't get disappointed and quit......it's the "perseverance" that will pay off eventually.

I do it all the time. Cents, Nickels, and Halves mostly. I'll look through the Quarter and Dime rolls in the wife's register at her store. The Cents and Halves are the most productive.

I like roll searching a lot. I have never found an error in the four years I've searched but I'm still learning and I only do about 100 rolls each of cents, nickels, and halves. I do find silver in the halves! I do find wheat pennies and nice old BU cents. I love filling my folders with the best circulated coins I can find. But most of all, I'm learning about errors, coin grading, and having a lot of fun in the process.

My son and I do a few rolls almost every day. We both look forward to searching together.

Its actually quite suprising what can be found in circulation with a bit of effort. With enough patience coins back to the 19th century can be found from many denomonations, someone on the forum even found a capped bust half!! Errors and varieties are also very findable.
If you are a beginner I would recommend buying a whitman folder and searching rolls from your local bank. Halves, Nickels, and Cents generally produce good finds at a reasonable rate. If your looking for silver id go with halves, if you like looking for varieties id go for cents, and if you like a bit of both id look through nickels. Dimes and Dollars can also be fun to search though these are a bit more hard. The only denomonation I would not recomend you start with would be quarters as they are so picked over that it would generally not be worth your while to search through (although some people still do).
