Very cool, zeewool! You have a lot of very intersting notes. My wife especially liked these. I think she has a thing for the "guy in the glasses"!

Hi schmidty The "guy in the glasses' just turned 82 last month and is revered as almost a demi-god here in Thailand. Wouldn't surprise me if he gained the same status as King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) on his passing. We have statues of him at our shrines at home and at the work place, alongside numerous Buddhas, monks, chinese deities and, my particular favourite, the Hindu god Ganesh (well he did like to party).

Thanks for the info, thai-vic. The reason my wife (and I) like collecting Thai coins and bills, is because it's neat to watch him "grow up" on the money. How old was he when he came to power?

Vic, I'm glad to hear that it won't surprise you when this comes to pass officially, because in the hearts and minds of the Thai people, it is already a reality. I have heard the term 'The Great' referenced many times in association with Bhumibol. For Thailand, he truly is the right man, in the right place, at the right time. Schmidty, I didn't know that you liked Thai notes. Maybe we have more in common than just bad tempers. You need to tell your wife to join the tens of millions of others who also have a thing for this guy in the glasses. The banknotes that I posted above are dated 1969, so as you can imagine, he has grown up a little since then. He became king (Rama 9) in 1946 at the age of 19, upon the death of his older brother (whom I think that you are confusing him with). The guy in the glasses will always be pictured with glasses, but his older brother will not have glasses. His older brother (Rama 8) was king during WW II and was very young throughout his short reign. (The boy king). These brothers were the nephews of Rama 7, who is pictured below on the 5 baht note. Below that are two 20 baht notes of Rama 8 (the boy king), and lastly is the fist portrait of Rama 9 (the current king).

zeewool, thanks for the info. Very informative! I didn't realize that I was thinking the two brothers were the same person.
And, thanks for telling me his name. "The guy in the glasses" isn't a very repectful name for a man who is so revered by his people. (No disrespect was intended)

And I meant none either, I was foolishly carrying on with the light heartedness. He sincerely loves the Thai people, and the Thai people sincerely reciprocate.

Oh, I don't think "carrying on with the light heartedness" is foolish, zeewool. And speaking of lightheartedness: Quote: You need to tell your wife to join the tens of millions of others who also have a thing for this guy in the glasses. Are you suggesting she move to Thailand?

It just might be a few degrees warmer than where she's at now. If not to move there, a two week vacation to Thailand would be absolutely a wonderful experience for just about anyone.
