Wasnt too hard to win considering I was the only one that bidded. For 8 bucks I was thinking it should be an interesting read. Looks like she's in good shape, and not a bad addition for the archives. I wonder if there is any coin prices in it. BTW, was Kresgee's an American Store or Canadian. Thanks http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITEdited by Dollar1948 01/19/2010 9:51 pm

Good buy.. Does it show any Hudson Bay lead tokens Here's a bit on SS Kresgees stores.. "Sebastian S. Kresge was a prosperous traveling salesman when, in 1884, he purchased part interest in two retail stores.[2] One of those two stores was located in Detroit; Kresge moved to the city and soon gained control of a five and dime retail store on Woodward. Kresge applied his own name to the store, and by 1899 was beginning to build a chain of five-and-dimes.[2] By 1912, the chain had expanded to 85 Kresge stores."

Congrats 48$ on a nice find! I myself landed a Charlton 1966 Edition a few years ago for under $10.00 in near mint condition. The pages have since tinted a faint yellow and it has that old time musky smell to it every time you open it. I just love to look at the old prices realized for coins 50+ years ago and sometimes wish I was a collector in those simple times when much of the good stuff came in bank rolls rather than coin shows ..................LOL Glenn

Me too Glenzy, I'm thinking as well, collecting coins back then may have been a more affordable hobby, because of the ability to find good silver coins and varieties that havent already been spoken for. Thanks for the poop on Kresge d23. Ill let ya know if if has any info on HBC token.

Was Kresge's not the forerunner to K-mart? K-mart was out of Detroit.I'have a 74 soft cover and a 1938 catalog from someone buying the prices are insane. Nice book, great reference can't say our hobby is a great investment but the entertainment value is worth it .

$1948, it's easy to say that in retrospect, but hard to know what it was like on the ground back then. If all the circulating coins were silver, would collecting them really be any different than collecting current nickel or plated coinage? Would people look that hard at their "pocket change" silver, or would they gravitate to the esoteric side once they had a good handle on the common date stuff?
Love the book BTW. I have the soft cover "buying prices" guide from '64, and have used on more than one occasion to see how it related to the current scarcity/value of coins many decades later.

Update: This item arrived today, very happy with the purchase. Im amazed it was published in the U.S (Whitman Publishing Wisconsin) even tho it was compiled and written by James Charlton. Somebody was asking about listings for HBC tokens, yep they are in there, along with playing card money. heres some extracts, BU-1858 Large Cent-$70.00 BU-1953 Small Cent Shoulder Fold-$15.00 VF-1926 Far 6-Five cent-$55.00 AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE.... UNC-1948 Silver Dollar-$80.00
