Hi I am considering on buying this Morgan silver dollar on ebay (If I buy this it would be my first Morgan dollar) but I've got a few questions.
It is a 1884-O and the seller says it is in mint state condition.

Does it look like that this coin has been cleaned/polished?
What would you grade this coin?
How much should I bid on this coin?

Here are some pictures:

I don't see enough luster to call this a mint state coin, besides there is some rim damage. I would grade this coin right around AU-55. AU-58 if there is more luster than the pictures are showing.

hello! I think this is the first time I've responded to you or message with you on a subject. First thing that I notice that would take this out of MS status is the gauge on the left side of the coin along the rim.

From these photos it is difficult to tell if a coin has been cleaned but it certainly does not look to be polished. Typically, when coins are polished the finer details and their edges are usually the shiniest and rounded. although, it may be the lighting and the pictures but it does appear to be dull on the surface.

There were approximately 9.7 million of this year and mint Mark produced. According to the PCGS chart if you were to grade this at AU (almost uncirculated)its value would be about $27. Please keep in mind this information is from the PCGS grading chart and they are typically very stringent in their grading and somewhat higher in their valuations. That price also reflects coins that are already graded and have been slabbed.

If it were me I would not give more than that amount listed above unless you really really like the coin. And that is 70% of coin collecting because you are the one who will be looking at it in your collection and you need to enjoy it!

I hope this helps

First, the rim hit is exactly that, and the con could still be unc.

Second, the coin has an unnatural look, I would guess cleaned.

That's a common date and I'm sure you could find many better examples for a decent price.

I agree with the rest here, that one will do no better than AU.

I need to stress a point I was making in my first post! If you like the coin and you feel you want to spend the amount of money that is comfortable to you to spend on the coin then there is nothing wrong with buying it. After all, that's why coin collecting is fun and exciting!

The coin does have some interesting attributes, there appear to be die cracks the obverse and some strange detail on the reverse which makes it somewhat unique. As I stated, you are the one that has to look at it in your collection and it is no fun looking at a coin you do not like. It is a strange thing, but true for me anyway.

I can go down to my local coin shop and find decent, problem-free Morgan dollars in choice AU grade for $20 and I get to look at many coins to pick the one I like best. I imagine you don't have that option in Australia unless you happen to have a local dealer who stocks a good US coin inventory.

If you buy a raw "BU" coin on ebay you may be disappointed when it arrives and you get to examine it in person. If you want a truly uncirculated Morgan I would advise paying a bit more for a certified coin (graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG). There are many on ebay in MS-63 grade which sell in the $30 to $40 range. You can be confident such coins are the real deal and you can always break them out of the slab if you want to put them in an album.

You're right. I've been to the majority of coin dealers in Melbourne and none of them have Morgan dollars in their stock.

Thanks for hemisboats and everyone else for their replies and I have decided not not buy this coin and I will buy a certified Morgan dollar from ebay.
