According to Numista, this is one of the rarer signature combinations.

On the Obverse you have António Luís de Meneses who was the 1st Marquis of Marialva and 3rd Count of Cantanhede (13 December 1596 - 16 August 1675), and was a member of the Forty Conspirators and a Portuguese general who fought in the Portuguese Restoration War, that ended the Iberian Union between Portugal and Spain.

Meneses was born in a noble family - his father was Dom Pedro de Menezes, 2nd count of Cantanhede, and his mother Dona Constança de Gusmão (daughter of Rui Gonçalves da Câmara, 1st count of Vila Franca). He took active part in the storming of the residence and the capture of the Duchess of Mantua, who governed Portugal in the name of Philip IV of Spain (Philip III of Portugal). He participated in almost every battle of the Portuguese Restoration War between 1641 and 1665. His greatest victories were the Battle of the Lines of Elvas in 1659 and the Battle of Montes Claros in 1665. He was present at the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon on 13 February 1668.

An another forum, I won this great Russian coupon in a contest. I had a friend of mine translate:

The front and reverse of the note feature António Sergio de Sousa (September 3, 1883 - February 12, 1969) who was an influential educationist, philosopher, journalist, sociologist and essayist from Portugal.

Antonio lived in Portugal under the Salazar regime, which lasted from 1926 to 1974. He was linked to the foundation of the Portuguese Socialist Party and to the Humberto Delgado candidacy of the Presidential Elections of 1958. (Humberto Delgado was later murdered by the PIDE, political police of "Salazarism"). Sergio was arrested in 1910, 1933, 1935, 1948 and 1958.  As a result of his imprisonment, he found the true "national unity" - to oppose the military dictatorship, first, and then Salazar.

He left an enormous work on Education, Epistemology, Culture, History and Politics, especially in his Essays. Most of the political activity of Sergio is linked to the idea that true democracy and freedom are a means for Education and Culture.

"The essential principle of democracy is never trust in those who are in the Govern" he wrote. His work influenced many important younger Portuguese, men of culture, science or politics.

This note is from the series of January 27, 1981 and is relatively common as almost 20 million notes were printed (just in that series). But as 5000 Escudos was the 2nd highest denomination printed at the time (on 12/31/1981 this note had a value of ~$76), not many were saved in CU condition.

Today's note is a 2000 escudos.

The obverse of the note features Bartolomeu Dias, who was a Portuguese mariner and explorer. He was the first European navigator to round the southern tip of Africa in 1488 and demonstrate that the most effective southward course lay in the open ocean well to west of the African coast. For the coin collectors, the obverse als feature a cruzado coin of King Dom João II

The reverse of the note contains the Portuguese ship Caravela sailing the African coast. On the note is a line from Luis Camoes (Portugal's most famous poet) "Os Lusíadas" which documents the Portuguese voyages of discovery.
