P#161 - 31.01.1956 - O Vice-Governador: Álvaro Pedro de Sousa; O Administrador: João Baptista de Araújo

The obverse of this note has a portrait of D. Filipa de Lancastre (31 March 1360 - 19 July 1415), who was Queen of Portugal from 1387 until 1415 by marriage to King John I. Born into the royal family of England, her marriage secured the Treaty of Windsor and produced several children who became known as the "Illustrious Generation" in Portugal.

This note comes from a small run of 4,095,000 and has a rarity index of 92 on Numista. Less than 1 note was printed for every 2 people.

I asked my mom about this note and she said she doesn't remember ever seeing one in circulation, 1000 Escudos was a lot of money in 1956 (equivalent to $34.78 USD), considering the GDP per capita was $360 in 1960, this note was 1/10th of your yearly income. I'm happy to get it, note is in XF condition with a minor center fold. The bleed through on the obverse is common with this series. The note is so large, I had to use 2 sleeves to cover it. I ordered a new storage case and will be moving a few of the larger notes to 8 by 5 top loaders, this will be one.

Obverse is António Maria de Fontes Pereira de Melo who was a Portuguese statesman and engineer. He was a leading parliamentarian and political figure of his time. Among other posts held, he was six times Minister of Finance and Minister of Public Works.

The obverse contains ""O Pensador" - the Statue "The Thinker" made by Leopoldo de Almeida

The statue is currently located in Museu do Jose Malhoa in Caldas Da Rainha, Portugal. Considering that Caldas is the nearest city to my moms and I've been at the park the museum is in, I should have known that, but its scheduled for next time we go to Portugal.

Caldas is famous for 3 things, a statue (usually of football (soccer) players, monks and priests) that you a pull a string and a male part that you can't post on a family friendly pops out (sadly no picture), cavacas which are sugar covered crunchy dough balls that will give you diabetes after having 2 (I'm actually not a fan), the below is the place to get them.

The 3rd thing are the hot springs (Caldas Da Rainha translated means The Queen's Hot Springs), below is a spa you can bathe in hot mineral water.

with 'jbuck' about the additional pictures: they really give nice contextual background for so many of your posts 'hfjacinto.' I was eyeballing P-160 myself but have yet to 'pull the trigger.' Another great (classic) Portuguese note.
