Was rather rainy out this morning, so I took a ride over to the local flea market. Came across a dealer that had a beautiful selection of coins (although some were overpriced in my opinion). Anyway, I ended up purchasing a 1964 silver dollar from Egypt. The dealer was unsure as to the silver content or weight of this coin. Could anyone offer an opinion on this coin as to the actual weight of silver in it? Thanks in advance - Dog. By the way, I also scooped up a couple nice Morgans for $14 each.

This probably doesn't help much but I'm showing a 20 Piastres for 1960 and 1966 with .3241 ASW. But this is an old Krause reference, 1998 I believe.

The 1964 Egyptian Dollar sized coin is most probably the Diversion of the Nile Commemorative 50 Piastres the KM 407 which is a dual dated piece AH 1384 and 1964 (in Arabic characters). Originals of this coin are just slightly over bullion price pieces unless the coin is MS or Proof. However, there is also a rather common forgery seen often in Flea Markets. The fake ones I have seen are all centrifugal castings made from decent cast transfer molds. Most are underweight - about 14-16 grams and made of different white metals. They are typically edged with poor quality reeds that display a split top - proof of being reeded with a tapered ring die.

If original the coin should weigh 20.00 grams. Even heavily worn it should never weigh under 19 to 19.3 grams. The coin is STRUCK from 0.720 fine silver so look for mint luster. If you can run a specific gravity on the coin look for a number in the 10 range NOT 8.9 or less.

Recently, I have been running into quite a few struck forgeries coming from Europe that are magnetic with an SG of 7.9. They look like nickel but I suspect an iron alloy. These have very low relief especially near the centers. The rims are also reeded BUT not with a ring die and not with a collar either. They usually have overlaps in the reeds.

Perhaps when I become a little more computer savy, I'll try to post a pic. The flip this came in says "Aswan Dam" on it (assuming describing the coin). On the coin itself, there appears to be some numbers 197E.

Hi Dogman

The only Aswan dam I find is for the pound coin,, If your coin has what looks like a power station on the rev. it is KM#415 and should weigh 25 grams it is made from 720 silver and has .5787 OZ VF 5.00 EF 6.00 and UNC at 8.00

The date however on this coin is 1968 ?
