Hi all! Two part question:

1. This coin isn't in my Krause for 1910. It's in there for 1902 and 1903 (KM #20) Why is this and what is it's value?

2. What is the deformation in the middle of the "5" on the reverse? Is it considered an error?

Thanks for the help!

In 1909, the fineness of the smaller Straits Settlements silver coins dropped from .800 fine to .600 fine. The 5 cent coins dated 1910 are listed in my 2006 edition Krause as KM# 20a.

The round deformation looks suspiciously like a mount mark; I think someone turned your coin into a home-made cuff-link. With a mount mark, your coin will only be worth bullion value.

Thanks Sap! I don't know why it's not in my Krause. Must be because mine is the "Collecting World Coins" version. It's supposed to have all the circulating world coins...apparently not quite all.

Thanks for the heads-up about it being a mount mark on the back. That's too bad. Just out of curiosity, what would the value have been if it wasn't an ex-cufflink?

Hard to say - it's use as a cufflink has caused much more wear on the obverse relative to the reverse. Still, it's a common enough coin - CV $1.25 in Fine in my 2006 edition KM.

Thanks, Sap. I thought, maybe, it was a somewhat rare coin since it wasn't in my Krause. Must have just been an oversight. OR...I am blind! I've looked 3 times now and have not found it. But, I have missed things before!

I appreciate the info!

Hi All,
I am so new that I don't know if I am replying correctly to this thread - I hope so - this is my first day on the forum. I too have a 1910 Straits Settlements 5 cent coin. I was wondering if there is any market for this coin and if it's condition is representative of the $1.25 value you referenced in your post - (doesn't have the cuff-link mount mark). I apologize for my ignorance and hope you'll see this post to your thread. Thank you, Nancy

Nancy- While I personally really love coins of the British possessions in Asia, unfortunately they are not very popular here in the US. This explains the rather low value for the above coin with the deformity. Seeing how your coin is also not in the best of condition it is also probably only worth about melt value. I would probably grade your coin Good-6 based upon the picture given, but there may be some detail hidden by the toning.
