I have read the blog and I have read the posts. I do not see any reason why a young person of today should be expected to recognize coinage he or she has never been exposed to before.

I agree with this comment. If I was making minimum wage as a cashier, I wouldn't want to risk taking something that I wasn't sure about. I certainly wouldn't want to take a customer at their word and be proven wrong after they were long gone.

I also have no problem with the cashier not knowing who Ben Franklin was. It seems presumptuous to judge an individual based on a trivial fact.

Great topic! It is alarming that people can't recognize legal tender coins when the see them. I feel it should be required to know our coins and paper money to get a job as a cashier. It just causes problems when cashiers are ignorant about the money from their own country for crying out loud! I was once a cashier. I knew my money and had no problems taking it when somebody paid with halves or dollar coins. Never gave them a second look. Of course I bought them after my shift!

Franklin in only trivial in Public education where such things as diversity of sexual orientation are deemed more worthy of discussion.

What sad is someone writes an article like this that likes to show how ignorant our citizens are in America when every country on this planet has similar problems. You could put any country's name in the Title and the article would work just the same

easy jasper62, that was not my intent at all. I'm very proud to be an American. My point of the post was to simply point out what I know: I ran into an fellow American who didn't know about this coin. It was to point out the sad state that I am familiar with - it just happens to be America. I'm sure you are 100% correct: Replace the country name with any other country name and you get the same effect.

Whew! Okay, good deal. I was concerned that I had offended. :-) Obviously that wasn't the intent. :-)

Stories like this are very common. I've had my share of them. My worst experience which made me hate those baby sized dollar coins was in a restaurant. With my Son and his wife we ate and I left several of those baby sized dollars on the table. At that time I was attempting to use them since they were made for that. As I walked away the waitress said loudly "Sir, you left some of your grandkids play money on the table".
I've had many instances where people gave me strange looks trying to spend a Half Dollar. I've had $2 bills refused. At a Walmart store the cashier had to call a manager when I tried using those baby sized dollar coins. A conductor on a commuter train tells people not to try using half dollars or those baby sized dollars since his coin changer has no place for them.
Lately I think I'd have it easier to use a Peso than an American coin.

My son is 5. Most of his friends are 4 or 5. They all know every denomination of our coinage.
There aren't many countries that produce coinage just to stock pile it and not place it into circulation because of a lack of education as to it existence.
When our dollar and two dollar coins were introduced, there were massive educational programs in place and everyone new what they were.
Same with virtually every other country that has changed or added to its coinage or currency, so on that note, substituting another countries name into the title wouldn't work.

Jasper, I only disagree when it comes to coinage. When it comes to education, especially a countries history, unfortunately I have to agree with you. It seems some things just aren't as important as they used to be.

The Feds do need to do a much better job of educating the public about our coinage. Especially the dollar coin that they keep changing. And those of us who do know, and love coins, need to help. I know some of you do this already, but from now on, I am going to start getting rolls of dollars and spending them.

I highly encourage all you dealers to hand them out as change, also. The more of them that get into circulation, the more people will know what they are!

I'm done preaching now!

Latman, I must point out to you something about US coinage:

We Americans (as a nation), require that our coinage be strange and confusing to us, to serve as tribute to the politicians and lawmakers whom we elect, and then wonder to ourselves "Who is this guy, and how did he ever get in office?"
