I hadn't heard about these, I just found it on the mint's website. It sounds a lot like the Statehood Quarters. Have I been living under a rock? About the ProgramBeginning in 2010, the United States Mint will issue 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program. The five quarters to be released in 2010 will honor Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Yosemite National Park in California, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. Check out the America the Beautiful Quarters National Site Register to find out which national site in your state or U.S. territory was selected. A restored version of the familiar 1932 John Flanagan portrait of George Washington will be featured on the obverse (heads side) of the quarters. Release Schedule Each year, the public will see five new national site designs depicted on the reverse (tails side) of America the Beautiful Quarters. The United States Mint will issue these quarters in the order in which the honored site was first established as a national site.

Well I think living under a rock in an understatement... more like living under a rock which is in a cave that is five miles deep into the earth under a mountain that happens to be on the floor of the pacific ocean. There have been dozens of posts about these new quarters and how the park choices suck.

Suck? I've been to two of the five for 2010 and they were spectacular. Particularly the Grand Canyon.

I also don't think you are that badly out of touch considering you have only been back about two months from your tour of duty in Iraq.

He said: "There have been dozens of posts about these new quarters and how the park choices suck."
That's not exactly an ambiguous statement.

not all of them suck, and some of them are down right GREAT.. how ever look at some of these choices District of Columbia........Frederick Douglass National Historic Site (so many better choices there... the Capitol Mall, Washington Monument, various War Memorials, Ford's Theater, et cetera) New Jersey........Ellis Island National Monument (Statue of Liberty) (The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York City http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_Of_Liberty ) Michigan........Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Lake Michigan, Mackinac Island, The Mackinac Bridge) Texas........San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (I guess no one remembers the ALAMO, or any of the 50 better sites in Texas) Virginia........Shenandoah National Park (It's pretty but there were 8 Presidents born in VA and most of their childhood homes are historically preserved sites.. as well as Arlington National Cemetery) The ultimate bone head choice North Carolina........Blue Ridge Parkway (IT'S A ROAD!!) And one thing that ticks me off is that the Devil's Tower National Park.. the FIRST national park, doesn't garner the respect of getting a design in their estimation... So yes the choices SUCK!

Coretj, have you actually been to any of the choices that you have decided suck?

DC - YES NJ - NO (but I think it is a dumb idea to choose a national historical site that is in another state.. though ellis island is 1/3 the way into NJ, but like I posted before the Statue Of Liberty in in NYC) MI - YES TX - YES VA - YES NC - Kinda ( I drove along part of the 213 miles of that road that are actually in VA) Devils Tower - YES
And I want to make something clear, I'm not saying the sites themselves suck, I'm saying the choices of those sites suck. There are so many places in each state I listed better than the ones that were chosen. I mean seriously who chooses a road as a National Historical Site to represent a State?

I agree with ya Coretj! Some of these sites could have been way better in my opinion.
And as a New Yorker who takes the boat past the Statue of Liberty nearly everyday, I can say I am a littel ticked about Jersey "stealing" our landmark. There's an active debate 'round these parts over who actually "owns" the site and to me it seems Jersey is sticking one to us NYers! Not that i'd like to see another NY quarter with the SoL on it but I sure as all heck dont want Jersey claiming it!

Quote: Texas........San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (I guess no one remembers the ALAMO, or any of the 50 better sites in Texas) Well, to tell the truth, the Alamo is a uniquely Texan monument. It is very significant in the battle for Independence from Mexico... to become the Republic of Texas. It remains a Texas Historical site, rather than a national one for that very reason. This made it ineligible for the quarter series. The Missions National Parks in San Antonio are four gorgeous Spanish Missions from about the same era as the Alamo, that have been turned into a National Monument. Of all the National parks here in Texas, I would think that only Big Bend might have competed with it.

Problem is,some states don't have much to offer for this kind of set. Bombay Hook NWR is a neat little place but it will NEVER be a tourist attraction. So by trying to include everybody the set suffers.

Devils Tower is an amazing place; however, it wasn't the first National Park, but rather, the first National Monument established in 1906. Yellowstone gained National Park status in 1872. There is a big difference in National Parks and National Monuments when it comes to funding and protection status, etc.
