It is funny how this thread works.
Everytime I share these pictures with someone else in real
life someone bumps this to the top.
Yesterday I was in National Pride coin and stamp in Edmonton. I didn't share because I didn't get any sort of education
on them. I didn't get much of an opinion
on them at all.

Hi Guys,

Interesting thread you have going here. I co-authored the article mentioned here. It was printed over 3 issues in the CNJ (Canadian Numismatic Journal). I'm interested in early early HBC tokens. I would love to see a scan of the HB token mentioned here.

For anyone interested here's a link to my article. Sorry it's a big (14mb) file. It's how I presented the article to the CNJ. They reprinted it with few minor changes.

I've accumulated a lot of additional information since I wrote this article.

..to the forum Dneumann, glad to have you on board as your article certainly sheds alot more light on these HB artifacts.

As discussed there is information in HB journals on casting lead symbols for the Cree language, HB reports on the treatment of natives by HB doctors etc.. But little to no information on the use and importance of trade currency used by the posts.

For what ever reason this seems to be a grey area and hopefully with every ones help we can come to a positive conclusion...

The Cree have a decent written history back to 1850/60's thanks to the adaptation of the Ojibwe syllabary. There has been discussion that they used the new method to capture formerly verbal histories dating back quite some time.

Has anyone asked them? Especially those bands in central northern areas such as Moosonee ?

It occurs to me to be a good follow up point given the opportunity and is made all the easier by modern communication.
