What would you experts think is the best scanner out there under $500 that will do my paper money and stamps.
My HP 3-1 is just way to slow.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Maybe not! I was looking for a new scanner and found this article. You have to be kidding me.

POLICY

Hewlet-Packard recently mailed a note to their dealers warning them that, when demonstrating the capabilities of HP scanners, they must avoid scanning money and other sensitive documents. Anyone who does scan such document risks Constructive Seizure of their computer equipment, up to $25,000 in fines, or up to fifteen years imprisonment (Needleman 1998). In fact, the U.S. government forbids people to scan money, Federal reserve notes, U.S. postage stamps, Foreign postage stamps, Revenue stamps, other negotiable valuated articles (checks, bonds, and securities) and identification document (drivers license and governmental identification documents). Moreover, if you want to scan photographs or text from copyrighted publications, you must have permission before using that material. Scanning raises many issues of copyright infringement.

All the better, scanners suck for numismatic purposes. Buy yourself a camera!

Hi there! I can't see how scanning currency can be illegel - unless you try to pass it as good money! I have some scanned on my website and I can't see any other way of describing the errors etc. satisfactorily for prospective buyers.
As to the question of a good scanner, I have just investigated and compared several for my own use and the best value one I found is an Epson V300 Perfection from Amazon at under $100.00. I offer this as an affiliate on my website for US and British visitors, but I don't cover any other countries.

I have used my scanner to do paper money even though I know its a grey area. But to answer yor own original question any 40.00 scanner should do a great job for paper money and stamps, its the coins they usually have a problem with but I used to have a scanner that I had when I was running windows95 and they never made any XP drivers for it so it was old and it did a good enough job for paper money (I think the max resolution was something like 600 or 800dpi) so any scanner should do a good enough job to show anything you are wanting to share with anyone on the internet. Now the speed may be the most problem you will have but if you take in the fact even with a camera you have to take the picture, then upload it to the computer and then edit the picture to make it a size you can send to someone or crop it out the scanners slow time may not be all that bad
