My Aunt & Uncle live in Fremont, California. I'm leaving next Thursday to visit and come back to Kansas on Sunday. Now, I certainly don't want to be rude to them and spend very much of my short time there searching coins, but I had a question or a "curiosity" about going there. If I were to have him take me to their bank and get a couple boxes of Cents, would I be more apt to find "S" mint Lincolns in that area (or even that state) because of Fremonts proximity to San Fransisco ? ..  Or would I find the same number of "S" mints here in Kansas as I would there near Frisco ? If it would be worth my time and somehow "different" than here in Kansas.....I would be interested in doin' just a little roll searching late in the evening ! |

I would think that if they are not or have never been into coin collecting, they may think you are a little of your rocker. I have done searching in front of relatives before and they just think I am a nut and that I am wasting my time. Even when I tell them that I am going to a coin show, they think it is a bunch of nerds sitting around comparing coins, like fisherman or hunters showing off there trophy fish or deer antlers.

Well.....they go to bed around 8:30 - 9:00 pm EVERY night I guess. And "I" haven't been to bed before 12:00 am midnight in 20 some years.....
So, I just figured that when "they" go to bed.....I could spend a few hours doing some roll searchin' !
My Grandmother had 8 children......she had my Uncle Chris when she was in her "early 40's". I am a year and a half "older" than my Uncle Chris ! We grew up as best friends and are still that today.....but he's lived in California since he was 18 (joined the Army.....lived there ever since) I've never been there before for a visit. Cut to the chase......he and his wife are VERY aware that I'm a coin collector ! And they both know about me getting "rolls to look through" for many years now. I've "given" him some coins through the years, although neither he nor his wife are into coin collecting AT ALL.....the only problem is that I don't want to do it if it will cut into the quality time with them and their kids......AND if I'm not going to have any different results than back here in Kansas.
So......Will I find more "S" mints of Lincolns (or any other denominations) there, 40 minutes from San Fransisco or not ?

I live in the SF Bay Area and I am inclined to say over a large sampling yes you are probably likely to find more "S" mint coins. It's been a while (6months) since I actively searched Lincolns but when I was I was finding many 68-74 S lincolns per box. Not sure how that compares to other parts of the country but given the scarcity of "P" mints on many coins the "proximity logic" of being near a mint seems to hold up. I have been searching nickels regularly and have found two 38s's through 32boxes. In the nickels forums I see many ppl who have searched far more boxes still looking for the 38s. That could have just been luck or perhaps proximity, but if I find 1 more before I finish my circulated set I'm going to go with proximity.

Oddly enough I am going to San Francisco on Sunday and will be their thru Wednesday. Taking it for granted that the banks will not be open on Sunday, I will have some down time on Monday morning and afternoon and may walk around where I am staying for some banks. Staying at the Hilton in Union Square. Anyone know of any banks near there? I typically get all my halves and nickels that I hunt here in Iowa from Wells Fargo. Ok I am officially hooked on roll hunting. When you go on a business reward trip / sales meeting, you start thinking of looking at coins.  |

Don't get used to the WARM weather out there. Compaired to Kansas, you might want to stay.
By the way, your quote from "The Mountain Men". That was Brian Keith to Charlton Heston, was it not?

They were of course the stars of that wonderful film......but no....the "quote" was Brian Kieth's character to the "greenhorn" who was travelling with them to the Rendezvous. The "greenhorn" had asked if he ever got lost "up here" in the high country, and this highly agitated and annoyed him because of his pride in being a good tracker and Mountain Man. |

If you buy and search boxes of cents in the town you live in, and feel that you may intrude on visiting time while you are in S.F., then why not just buy boxes in S.F. and take them home to Kansas to search?

I live very near to Sacramento, and have only roll searched about $50 worth of cents. I almost have a whole roll of 68-74S combined.

I'm in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Roughly a 4 hour drive from the city. I've been roll hunting for less than a year. On average, I go through a couple of boxes a week. I've managed to gather almost 3 rolls of 68-s, and 9 rolls of 70-s. (I save each and every one of these for two reasons. 1. The 68-s is the lowest-mintage LMC. 2. I'm paranoid about possibly throwing away a 1970-s small date.  71-74...I've managed to snag almost full rolls of each year with quite a bit of red still showing. Don't come out here looking for Philly mints though.  I'm lucky to find any in good condition. 3 more things.... 1. Fresh sourdough bread from Fishermans Wharf...  2. Clam Chowder inside a fresh sourdough breadbowl... 3. A quick visit and tour of AT&T Park...  Beautiful ballyard, and the home of my Giants!  |

I live in the SFBay area--and yes, in the past you would find more S-mint cents here. However, since people have started pulling the bronze cents, far fewer 70s LMCs are in bank boxes--or so I've seen. As far as stuff to see in the area--if you like classic cars, there's an awesome museum only 1/2 hour from Fremont. |

 ...... Hey guys thanks for the tips on stuff to do and see....didn't expect that ! My Aunt & Uncle, I believe have the entire weekend booked with stuff though....I know Alcatraz is one of the things....Napa Valley....Fishermans Wharf was one thing too, as mentioned.....ummm....Chinatown.....and some beach area, but I can't remember the name. I can't take any "boxes home to Kansas", because I'm only bringing a "carry-on" bag with no luggage. So, if I do it, it will all have to stay there....(except what I find of course) And YES !! ...Gotta try me some clam chowder and Sourdough bread ! .....Absolutely !Edited by eaglefoot

Hmm Union square? There should be a bank on every corner in that part of town, it is entering the financial district. I don't know about halve but don't forget to hit the Pier and snatch up some sourdough and chowder as another poster recommended..
Looking for a nice shop to poke around?, in the Hobart building hidden right there in downtown is a nice little place that always has some goodies. Witter Coins, Should be right by your hotel. (where 2nd Street dead ends with Market...about 4 blocks from union square)

I worked in the Financial District for years...there is the Federal Reserve there too. Sadly, the SF Mint has stopped tours. Seriously, though...I would skip banks in SF just due to sheer hassle/expense of parking, etc. If you're going to the Fisherman's Wharf, then park out near Ghirardelli Square--or the strip of parking near the Maritime Museum at the end of Jefferson. Avoid Pier 39 like the plaque--a total ripoff parking scene--just sayin' as one who once got taken. |

Muncle (short for "my uncle") has lived there for twenty some years....so I'm assuming he's "savy" with all of the in's and out's for the area. And I'm going by myself and staying with them.....so there won't be any need for a "hotel"....we'll just be driving to and from places from his house. He lives in a nice $500,000.00 home.....which is probably about the size of a postage stamp for California right ? ... Still don't know if I'm gonna go after any coins or not though....
