I have a 400.00 gift card from Wal-mart and I'm considering buying a new digital camera so I can take pics of my coins and post them.
The pics I have posted in the past were said to be to small. I take them on a scanner.
I'm unfortanate to be limited to Wal-mart.
Can anyone give me an idea on the type to buy.

If you can get the Nikon D40 for about $350 at Wal-mart that would be a good camera for the price.

A lot have had success with the Canon SD780IS ... just search this site for other threads about that. I have it and picked it up at Walmart about six months ago and I'm very happy with it.

If you're going to drop close to $400 on a camera, it should do a heck of a lot more than take nice pics of coins. There are plenty of examples on this forum of people using elderly 3MP cameras to post stunning coin pics (Bryan, you reading this? ). Just about any modern camera can be made to shoot coins decently; the difference in results you see is more related to the learning curve and commitment of the operator than to the actual quality of the camera being used.

My point? If you're gonna use that gift card for a camera at Walmart, buy this:

I've no doubt it can take quality coin pictures. It's also a supremely competent all-around camera, with a huge zoom, image stabilization and the ability to shoot HD video. For $400, I want all that.

Whatever you buy, we can figure out how to maximize its' abilities.

I've had my scanner for about s or 7 years now, and am just now learning how to use it.

Does your scanner not afford you the ability to select different 'dpi' settings? If it does, maybe you don't need a camera.

Agreed, that's a LOT of camera for the price and the best they have in the $400 range.

Yes I am reading this, and it is a fact. I use a 3.2MP JVC I paid $25.00 for on ebay quite a few years ago and even though it is a simple point and shoot camera it took me something like 4 years to finally figure out how to take coin pictures with it that I was satisfied with. I have no extra lenses or anything just the camera on macro setting and a tripod and it takes pictures I can actually be proud of and that actually look like the coin I am trying to photograph. Now this isn't the camera I use for everyting else because lets face it in todays day and age 3.2Mp is what you should get from a phone not a camera so I have another camera for everything else
