My husband and I have decided to look into selling a sizeable coin collection but not sure how to go about doing it. I pulled a couple of coins out of the heavy box and found some coins talked about on the web however not the rare years. Most were purchased over 20 years ago. Don't know where to turn to get this collection valued. Any ideas would be appreciated.

you've come to the right place. :)

Generally, if you can post a list of the coins including the country, date they were minted, value, mintmark if you see one, and hopefully a photograph of the coin, the wonderful people here can give a ballpark figure on value. Is this your collection or did you inherit it, etc?

My recommendations to you:

1. Don't do ANYTHING hastily.

2. Do not clean the coins, or remove them from any packaging/holders.

If you already know those things, I apologize for starting with the basics.

3. Post pictures and descriptions here, for the CCF to help with basic value.

4. Find a local Coin Store (or two or three) and ask if they can look at it for you. Some stores will appraise a collection for free, or for a small charge, depending on size. If they give you an estimate on what they'd buy the collection for, think about it! Try to take it to another dealer for a similar appraisal.

5. Depending on what you want to do with the collection, you can sell it to the dealer, try to sell it in pieces, or (I don't recommend but it is an option,) ebay.

Good luck!
Rest in Peace

Check with Bobby and Susan (Forum Dad and Mom) and sell through them. They take a fair commission and do all of the work.

to the community.

If you could post some pictures of the coins, we could give you some idea as to value before you decide to sell the. ElleKitty has given some good advise.

Yes your in the right place. HOWEVER, do NOT take anything to a coin store. That would sort of like just standing on a corner and yelling out here, help yourself. Of course not all coin stores are bad but why find out the hard way. Sort of like taking a car to a used car lot and asking how much. Normally if they know you want to sell, they will offer you the lowest price possible.
As noted take your time. Find out what you have.
If you do find a coin store anywhere in your area, or a book store, try to purchase a Red Book by Whitmany Publishing. The exact year is not to important, since the prices are about 2 to 3 years ahead of normalicy.
With that book, find out what you have in the way of possible expensive coins prior to letting anyone know you plan on selling them. If you don't want to do that and if there isn't a large amount of coins, try posting a list here for an approximate value. If there is a large amount, there are numerous on line coin price listings such as the PCGS web site lists but those too are a little on the high side and are usually what you would pay for coins, not sell.
