In Britain, the best "all in one" coin book is the Spink catalogue, "Coins of England and the United Kingdom". It covers the whole sweep of English/British coinage, from Celtic and Roman times through the mediaeval period right up to modern issues.

If that book's a bit pricey and all you really want to know about is the modern coinage, Rotographic put out a series of books that you might find of interest.

If foreign coins are more your thing, try the Krause catalogues.
