An obvious newbie here but nothing beats education so I have 2 questions about circulation and mintage that I would surely appreciate an answer to.

Using this example to ask my question.
For a 1924 20$ Double Eagle. Philadelphia Mint
On PCGS's website, it says:

PCGS#: 9177
Mintage: 4323500
Circulation strikes: 4,323,500

I understand what a Circulation Strike coin is - coin made to be spent

What I am not clear on is Circulation Strikes
The Mintage and Strike #'s are the same in the example above.

Does this mean that there were 4,323,500 Double Eagle coins of ALL grades made in 1924 at the Philadelphia Mint?
ie. There are 4,323,500 1924 Double Eagle Coins possibly in existence?

Does it also mean that for single strike coins, Strikes and Mintage are the same? ie. For single strike coins, Strike # merely means the number of coins produced?

I hope my question was worded clearly enough.

Thank you

queenjo- Ah, there is no shame in asking any question. We all were newbies at one point.

Well, the mintage is in fact the TOTAL number made of that type. A circulation strike is a coin intended to be spent. On the website they only had a second listing for this number since some coins are made in special Proof condition, which means that they are sold directly to collectors and have extra nice & shiny surfaces. So the website is saying that of all types of this coin made (circulation & proof) there are 4,323,500. Since there were also that many circulation strikes, that means that there were no proofs of that type (or at least they are not part of this listing).

Thanks for the excellent explanation. I also have verified the coin using the certification number on PCGS's website.

I am trying to get a 'crash course' on the subtleies of coins and cost valuating because I have an opportunity to buy a 1924 St. Gaudens Double Eagle MS64 which is from the Rive D'or Collection(Hoard).

I have to make a decision by lnmch tomorrow as the seller has 10 people in line for this and I am #1.

It is QUITE expensive(for me)
