Been meaning to do this for a while. The other day I started carrying a couple halves in my pocket, along with other change and whatever else might happen to be living in there.
1942 Walker Starting weight: 12.450 grams Starting grade: VF-30
1967 Half (silver-clad) Starting weight: 11.630 grams
I'll weight them on a regular basis to see how fast (or slow) they lose weight. And if anyone cares, I'll post those results here from time to time.
A clad half is gonna jump into the pocket tonight.
( edit ) The Kennedy is overweight. Is that within spec?

Pretty cool. I'm doing a similar thing with 4 beaten up wheat pennies. They are damaged slightly, probably around XF right now. I'm seeing how long it will take to get them down to AG or lower! I don't have scales to weigh them though...

An interesting experiment. I like experiments. Will these just be in your pocket, or do you plan to fiddle with them at times? Yes, please share your results.

There will probably be a little more fiddling than there would be without them...although since I pay cash for everything, the coins in my pocket already do get an occasional shake and glance in hand to make sure I didn't miss something I want to keep. Any direct fiddling with one of the halves would generally involve holding it by the edge.

If mixed in with other coins, be carefull. Might end up using one in a vending machine.

Not too many vending machines take half dollars anymore. And yes the Kennedy is within spec. Spec is 11.5 grams +/- .4 grams, so a 40% half that weighs anywhere from 11.1 to 11.9 grams is within spec. (When they went to clad, even 40%, the specs went down the tubes.)

Quote: I keep trying to do this with one of those new dollar coins. I keep losing it =/ I've managed to keep a driving range token in my possession for 4 months now, which is pretty amazing for me. So I figure I just might be able hang on to these coins. Hmmmm...should weigh that token and see how it holds up over time compared to US clad coinage.

This is a pretty cool experiment when are you gonna give your first update?

Here's an update: they haven't lost any weight yet. I do need to post the starting weights of the other coins that joined the game.

Very interesting experiment! Please keep us updated. Pictures would be nice too to see the wear/weight relation.

Results after 1 month:
1942: 12.448g (started 12.450g) 1967: 12.628g (started 12.630g) 1974: 12.268g (it started at this weight)
The scale weighs to 0.002g, so it took a month for 2 of them drop one blip. Which means they could have lost as little as 0.0001 grams and as much as 0.0029 grams.
It's gonna take a while to get measurable results.

Results as of May 3 (almost 3 months)
1942: 12.444g (started 12.450g) 1967: 12.626g (started 12.630g) 1974: 12.268g (it started at this weight)
The 90% silver coin is wearing the quickest, and the clad piece has no measurable weight loss.

If you keep them in there long enough they might just disappear. LOL

Guess you missed the Actually I don't think any vending machines take them.
