I don't know where they came from (cereal box?)

None were kept pristine, but they are brass appearance, with a protratit of a U.S. president on the obverse, the name of the president, the years of the president, and under the bust of the president it delineates what # president he was.

On the reverse, there is a brief write-up on that president.

There are no identifying marks.

I have Washington, (2) Jeffersons, Lincoln, FDR and Truman. So it's not even a complete set.

They are about the size of as a half dollar.

Here is what one looks like:

Anyone ever see one of these?

I won a set of these in an auction here a few weeks ago.

Doing a little research it appears Franklin Mint made these for Shell Oil back in the late 60s. Shell used them as a promotion. Some were minted again in the 90s.

Funny, I emailed the seller you linked to and asked if they knew the origin or composition of the token. They didn't but guarantee it's authentic.

It is difficult to say where any of this type of item comes from. There are and have been MANY MANY private mints in this country making private meals for promotions, businesses, organizations etc and a set of the presidents has always been a very popular subject and to a large extent they all tend to run to this same type of format. Most of them do not identify the mint of issue or who they were made for. I bet someone could collect nothing but these President medals and do so for years. It also would not surprise me to find that there are more than fifty different sets of the Presidents out there. The only way you could approximately date the sets is by who the last president is in the set. Unfortunately as far as I know no one has ever done such a collection or research so there is no reference to check.

RPT may be right about this piece, but the Franklin mint usually does include their mintmark on their products, and if the were made for Shell oil I would expect to see Shell's name on them somewhere. The oil companies were responsible for a lot of medal giveaways (including several Presidential series) and promotions, but typically they did identify themselves on their giveaways.

Going back to e-bay, I see the coins designated (sometimes) as Shell Oil coins, and there is a nice packaged set. http://cgi.ebay.com/SHELL-PRESIDENT...em45f4349d65

Truthfully, I just feel teh need to get rid of them. Mine are handled, dirty coins. I am just in the mood to get rid of stuff that is taking up space. These are on the list (and were even before I knew what they were).

My first thought on looking at the picture was that they are the Shell Presidential coins from the 90's. I have a bunch of them and a complete set in the display card. There were (as I recall) only about 10 to the set. I see others have indicated the same thing. I have no idea what value they may have, but they are cool looking and make a nice set. I also have two of the earlier 60's sets, one that my grandmother put together and gave me eons ago, and another that I got on ebay less than an eon ago. I'll see if I can grab a couple of photos.
