I think I got this in the early 80's when I was in the navy.It's about the size of a half dollar and weighs 9.2 grams.I'm guessing it's copper.Any info appreciated

These are very nice coins, they're about as big as the UK penny of the time, all in the same empire I guess.

You may occasionally see debate as whether or not the American 1 cent coin should properly be called a "penny" on an international coin forum like this one; coins like this are the reason why this debate happens.

This coin is not a cent; it's a penny; a "real penny", and there weren't 100 of them to a dollar. There were 12 pence (the plural of "penny" as a currency unit) to a shilling, 5 shillings to a crown, and 4 crowns to a pound. So a penny is 1/240th of a pound, or 1/60th of a crown. A "crown" was a large silver coin, only slightly heavier than a US dollar, so as far as exchange value went, the penny was the equivalent of almost 2 US cents.

Britain, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries all issued coins the same size as this, but with different local designs.

Thanks Sap for the information,It sounds confusing to me. I have seen a debate about the Cent vs Penny.I knew enough to stay out of it and just try to learn.You guy's are incredible with the Knowledge you have acquired and thank you for Sharing it with the rest of us

cool history there, I always wondered why there were 2 names being used....both in terms of 1 1/100th....now it all makes cents!
