Everyone,
I know this has been covered before, but I can't find the thread, so I'm re-asking. How is it that American Eagles are available at the dealer, but not at the mint? I know it has something to do with dealers getting unc's and the mint producing Proof - W's. Can someone clear this up for me?

The UNC's are bullion coins, distributed to dealers. The proof coins are US Mint products. I think you have it right as you state it.

No I don't think I do have it right because I'm looking at Gainesville Coins and the 2010 American Eagle "W" which I think is only a proof coin. On their American Buffalo's they indicate Private Mint. I really don't know what Private Mint means.

I see now. They make the bullion coins and distribute. They make the proof coins. And starting in 2006, but not 2009, they made special burnished uncirculated coins at West Point (hence the W).

All silver eagles are made at west point I believe. General issue uncirculated coins are only sold to a select few dealers. The mint sells Proof versions and special issue uncirculated coins to the general public. The 2010 eagle being offered by Gainsville are the generic uncirculated variety. (not available to the public from the mint) The 2010 silver Buffalo is not made by the US mint and is a silver round.

there are proof and Uncirculated W ASE's. The Mint sells both of these, and both are aimed at collectors. The Uncirculated Bullion coins that the mint doesn't sell to individuals they send to Huge distributors and then those distributors will sell to other dealers in smaller quantities. The West point (W mint mark) Uncirculated coin is minted with Burnished dies and sold by the mint to collectors and not considered bullion coins like you would find in tubes or green monster boxes

I need some help on Silver Eagle Proofs. What proof years contain the "S' mint mark and what years contain the "W" mint mark. Were there any proofs years without a mint mark? Are there any Eagles that contain the "W" mint mark but are not considered proof? Thanks for your anticipated help on this. edgman/Tom R

Proof Silver Eagles were minted in San Francisco(S) from 1986-1992, Philadelphia(P) from 1993-2000, and West Point(W) from 2001- present. All proofs will have one of those three mint marks. The only exception was a special 1995-W proof included with the 10th Anniversary 4 coin gold set. This coin is an anomaly with a mintage of ~30,000 and it is worth a mere $3000 or so. In 2006 The Mint released a special burnished finish coin(Uncirculated in Mint terminology as opposed to Bullion for the regular Eagles) that carried the W mintmark. This coin was available one of three ways- in the three coin 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set, the two coin 20th Anniversary Eagle Set with a 1oz gold and 1oz silver, and also sold individually. The W mintmark burnished coins were also minted in 2007 and 2008 and sold individually. There were no Proofs or Burnished coins minted in 2009 but they are supposed to return at some point in 2010, we shall see...
