Wow! That looks like a 1916 to me! The weakness in the shield, and the hair curl both indicate 1916.

Solid AG-3, but might be in a Genuine holder due to the rim damage. Amazing find, most likely a $800+ coin, possibly higher.

Sorry if I'm asking a "dumb" question - is there anything that can be done to help bring out the date at all that the normal person could do without damaging the coin any further?
Best of luck on it being a 16 - how will you really find out? Send to ANACS?

Yeah, and where did you get that Standing quarter Nod? You just massively eclipsed my 1921 SLQ find...lol. The 1916 has been my dream coin for a while, and I have considered saving up for one. Color me jealous.

I hope it comes back 1916, man! That would be AWESOME! Based on the diagnostics in that website I agree theres a good possibility.

Now I'm almost 100% sure it's a 1916. I recently picked up a good reference book for SLQ's, and it matches almost every diagnostic the book has listed for 1916's. It will probably get into a Genuine holder if sent to PCGS, or a AG-3 Details grade if sent anywhere else. What do you plan to do with it afterward?

Ok, took the time to read the whole article and I have to concur that you have a 1916 specimen on your hands. The weak shield, the robe in front vs back of railing and the hair wisp are clear indicators. You have a winner!

LOL - already done! I went to the Lakeland Show today and picked up a couple - and I have one I actually am not 100% sure on. I SUCK out loud with photos though, so I need to work on that and get some pics up. It was in a bucket of silver quarters - mostly Washingtons and other no date SLQs, and was the only type 1.
I'll work on the photo thing, but even the wife (who could really care less) says she can see the outline of a 6.
I'm not so sure though, as I think the head resembles the placement/size of the 17 too closely. Probably about 99% that its a 17.
Still fun to look though.

Quote:Now the rest of us will be buying up the slq junk lots on ebay hoping for a 16 or 21 I think in both cases we got very lucky... but yeah, between Nod and I, we might be able to complete an SLQ set from junk! We found 3 out of 4 keys. All we need now is for someone to find a 23-s and we'll have all 4 keys pulled from junk!

no luck here - mine is a 17. Further research and a much better microscope at a friends house finalized it. Oh well, still a decent 17 type 1 for two and a half bucks!

This might be the most awesome thread I've read in a while. Congrats on the 1916 nod.
