I got some standing liberties in a junk silver quarter lot today, and 3 of them, while dateless, are type 1. What is the value of a dateless type one, is it still only melt value? Edited by nod2003 02/22/2010 4:00 pm

I've seen dateless 1917 SLQ's on BIN for $10, but I don't know if those sell. There is a premium for them though, although I can't say exactly how much.

It depends. If they are dateless 1917 type 1 then they are basically only worth silver. If they are a dateless 1916 they can be worth a couple hundred dollars.

Without a date, how can one differentiate?

Quote: Is that all? Seems low... I'd buy dateless 1916s all day long for a couple hundred dollars. The latest ANACS FR-2 went for $1,500 on heritage; and AG-3s seem to hover around 2K. Tis my dream to own a 1916; I'd settle for a nice G-4 for 3K. Quote: I assume it doesn't have a mint mark. Otherwise, there are differences. ( googling now ) Cool, found something: Yeah, it is actually quite easy to differentiate between a dateless 1916 and 1917; even all the way down to the FR-2 level of detail. I've been searching through dozens of dateless type 1s for a 1916, but no luck yet. I'll keep chasing the dream though.... Anyways, post pics if you like, and we'll let you know what you got.

Ok, hard to tell from the wear, but I have one that is obviously a 1917, and one that is questionable. First, the obvious 1917:

The head detailing makes me think the "questionable quarter" is a 1916

This is all just opinion, but I think the second one could be a 1916. I didn't spend too much time looking at the diagnostics, but on a 1916 the rivets on the shield are much weaker than the 1917, and I think I can make out a tiny part of the date. Also, I have to agree with Johnny, any dateless 1916's go for around what he quoted. There was a nice G-4 recently that sold for $2700 on ebay.

Yes, I'm 90% sure it's a 1916. The reed above Liberty's head was cut in half to make room for the head on the 1916, the same as yours.
