one would have to wonder why the metal nickel was used in coins? especially the 5 cent coins........now I wounder where that term came from?

75% copper, 25% nickel.

Silver wasn't used in nickels until 1942.

That's where it came from, all right. However, the term was first applied to the first coin using that composition - the original copper-nickel Indian Head cents were called "nickels," and then the Three Cent Nickel after that.
