Any help welcome on this please.

Bought it a few years ago in a very poor uncleaned lot - I now have some decent detail on the reverse - enough to ID I think but I'm struggling with it and keep ending back at square one.

Below are 3 pictures - I have had no luck so far searching either the visible text or the detail (cornucopia?, snake?, lizard?).

Its only 10mm across so not much to go on, just hoping some of you may recognise it or be able to steer me in the right direction.

The 3rd pic is the reverse taken upside-down as I'm not even 100% which way up it should be!

Many thanks in advance bobby.

I've now added possible Celtic to the title of this thread having found that my coin matches some Celtics in style - see below.

The amount of text on mine would be a little unusual for a Celtic though as they are mainly pictorial - Unless however its a Celtic copy of a Roman or Greek - Think I'm more confused now than when I started!

I'm not sure about this one. It's not Roman Republican period, because early Roman bronzes don't normally have text on them.

It looks Greek or Roman Provincial to me; more Greek, I guess, given that it doesn't seem to be an imperial portrait.

As I read it, the text says "RETRAS" or "RETRAE" in Greek. Or maybe "PETPAE" in Latin. Like you, I haven't had luck finding a match.

Thanks Sap - having had a good look at the boards and your answers on them I was hoping you would give an opinion on this.

I'll keep looking and head towards the Provincial and Greeks. I think you are prob right about the text too although is so poorly stamped and small I think I will have to get lucky and come across a picture of a better quality similar coin to 100% it.

I wouldn't normally spend this much time on a coin but its by far the most interesting thing I've ever found in an uncleaned lot.
