Hello,

I'm looking into buying 2 2009 Silver Bullion Coins from my local coin dealer
[url="https://goccf.com/t/60159">(see my previous post,)[/url]
who sells them for $23.00 but does not have any in stock . I'm doing this because 2009 ASE Proof coins were not minted. I was going to buy the nice American Silver Eagle boxes from ebay since the chances of coin dealers at a show having them would be slim.

My question is this, why are bullion coins cheaper than the proof versions? Also, Proof version from 1986 to today seem easier to find. I LOVE Proof coins of any kind and that is why I collect Proofs almost exclusively at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

US Proofs are a special die that highly refined. It gives you the Deep Cameo fields. On older proofs it was a hit or miss with them as the die only holds up to about 500 to 1000 strikes and the mint was not so good at refreshing the worn dies of old. That is one reason why Pre 1970 proofs have a premium on the DMUC ultra cameo. Find a Proof 1950 half that is a ultra deep cameo in a solid grade you can trade it in for a car.

The bullion Eagles are strictly meant as an investment vehicle for silver while the Proof Eagles are special coins created exclusively for collectors, the productions costs of the two are quite different and the mintages of the proofs are much smaller than the bullion coins.
