This coin weights 28.2 g on my digital scale and 38.5 mm in diameter

It is stated in Krause that there are two 1977 New pence, one is copper-nickel and the other is silver proof.

my coin doesn't seem proof to me but may a copper-nickel and a silver coin of same size weight the same ?

Thanks

My understanding is that proof issues came in silver and copper-nickel.

Since yours is not proof, then is the copper-nickel one.

This is a 1977 Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee commemorative medal. I was born in this year and later found out I got a few as christening presents.

Unfortunately even though it was ERIIs Silver Jubilee the medal was not made in silver - sorry.

I am curious bobbyhelmet, why you call this a medal?

The coin shown matches all of the pictures of the crown coin which at that time had a face value of 25 pence.

None of the 4 crown coins released from 1972 to 1981 have a face value on them.

Silver proofs were made available for collectors from The Royal Mint.

The 1972 and 1997 copper nickel proof releases were also included in proof sets.

It absolutely is 25 pence, not a medal. The only British Elizabeth II coin that does not bear her profile effigy.

Not sure really. I've only ever heard it referred to as that or a medallion - I didn't think with it being post decimalisation, not having a value on it and not being intended for circulation it was legal tender so hence didn't call it a coin.

I now know there are 4 of them post dec that are legal tender - news to me! Though they can only be spent in post offices to the value of 25p.

And your right they did make some silver proofs - 370K and 37mil cu-nis.

The 1953 Crown is another that does not bear her profile effigy.

Yes, you are right. And the 1977 Silver Jubilee crown (25 pence) was modeled after the Coronation crown.
