Have a 2009 UHR $20 gold piece in the original US mint box with all papers. Should I pull the coin and have it graded by NGC or leave it in its original packing? I do plan on selling the coin several years from now. Whats the best way to go?

I would not send it in unless I was reasonably sure it would grade 70 and that is tough to do.

The UHR is a great coin but it's valued primarily on it's bullion content. Me? I'd leave it in the OGP (Original Gov't Packaging).

I agree with Brad, leave it alone. Just make sure the box is stored properly. It should be in a ziplock with a dessicant pack.

I also agree, it is a dice shoot between 69 and 70 and usually no one can tell the difference between the two without looking at the label the TPG put on the slab. With that in mind if you think there is any possibility it would not grade 70 then whether it be in a NGC slab or OGP the price is usually close together and sometimes the OGP coin will sell for more than the graded example

get it graded if it appears prooflike, NGC ms69pl coins sell at similar prices to ms 70's and MS70 pl's sell in the $4500 range.

I'm not familiar with these but I was thinking, is it possible to get it graded in the "OGP" slab? I understand some GSA dollars were graded that way, in the GSA slabs. I mean, if you wanted it graded and at the same time wanted to preserve some of its original, well, um, "gift-wrapping."

I do not plan on grading it as IMO it really does not matter as the mint changed the dies every 300 coins. I specifically asked them about the "first strike" designation for which the above answer was given to me. Ergo, all coins are first strike. Also that is why there was such a big premium on these coins. It costs them around $250 + the cost of gold per coin to make.

My suggestion would be to keep your original paper work together whether you grade or not.

Below is an article about the coin from coin news.

GSA is a whole different ball of wax. The GSA cases aren't OGP it is just cases the GSA inserted the coins they found in the vaults into before selling them and even at that NGC is the only one who will leave a GSA in the GSA holder PCGS and ANACS will not. The OGP is just like a smaller version of airtite so there would be no way to grade the coin in there and make it tamper resistant which is important with coin grading companies because of the guarantee
