Whet to TD Bank today to dump some halves. Teller came up to me and said "OH so are all those dollars" after getting my ticket which was 248.51 . one half was rejected and the cent must of been from someone else. I go to the window and hand the teller my receipt along with one half and one dollar and ask for large bills. The teller proceeds to give me 51 cents. When I corrected her she said isn't that a dollar. she then gave me a penny and this screwed her up again as she was going to give me 249 bucks. I once again had to correct her.

Maybe before hiring tellers they need to have a paper with pictures of coins and have them fill in the blanks.

Well, one would think that at a bank they SHOULD know what the heck coin of the realm looks like, if nowhere else, anyway.

Like when a bank teller refuses to take an Ike. hehehe. She looked at me and said this isn't from the US. I said OK? Just smiled and walked out. I had one in a big jar of coins that I cashed in this last week.

i had called around and asked if any banks had "halves", the woman teller/manager replied" ohm the big ole dollars? No, I said patiently, half dollars... , " oh the big ones?" she replied... again, I said firm and clear, " no maam, HALF DOLLARS, they are smaller than the big ones".. "Ikes?" she replied... anyway, she eventually had to ask someone else... but I feel your pain

while working at the bank I once had a coworker ask me if a bill was fake, it ended up just being a series of 1950 bill. Most tellers are clueless, if they werent roll searching would be a whole lot less fun.

Had a similar experience like that before. I turned in a box of halves and the teller was going to give me $1,000 because she thought they were all dollars. I politely told her they were half dollars so I only needed $500. She told me she never saw one before and thanked me for being honest. I am surprised when some of these tellers tell me they have never seen a half or and IKE before. I agree most do not come across such a large quantity, but people still turn them in frequently enough. I was a teller for 2 years and we would get halves often and IKES every now and then. Some tellers just don't care about coins.
Rest in Peace

Most of the public including bank tellers and cash register personnel are clueless about our coins and currency.

What is interesting to me about the interactions people are having on this isn't just people's lack of familiarity with certain coins. It is people's inability to read, or at least realize they should try reading. All of these coins state the denomination right on them, and in the case of the "not a US coin" having the words "United States of America" might be worth looking at before you make a fool of yourself!

Most of the tellers around me are under 25 years old (I'm only 30 myself) so few of them know the difference between Ikes, Kennedy's etc. Works for me though, like others pointed out, they would keep all the silver for themselves if they had a clue!

I hit a lot of banks in my area and haven't really seen this too much. I've gotten and traded in numerous halves, Ikes, golden dollars SBAs and $2 bills without any questions over the past few months. Fortunately, most tellers don't know about silver because I've been handed a 40%er and a Franklin half by bank tellers in the past month :)

Yesterday I was chatting with a teller who sold me a box of nickels and she was telling *me* to keep an eye out for silver halves when I'm searching for coins! Turns out her boyfriend is a collector and a roll hunter - guess I'm not getting any goodies out of the teller trays there.

Where are you guys located? Maybe the tellers near me just see more "weird stuff" because I'm near a large city.

Seems like I have the way opposite side of the spectrum. The tellers / bankers I see know way to much! They seem to know when silver coin or red / blue seal bills come thru the door, they snatch them...

Yesterday I wanted to give a teller nice un circulated Kennedy half (2009 D) in a flip as she has been very helpful with my nickel boxes. So I asked the manger if it was ok to give it to her. The manager's response "what is that"?

My son who was with me thought this whole episode was hilarious. I did explain to the manger that it was a 50 cent piece.

Peace
