this subject may have been discussed in great length in the past but I am new to the forum and I couldn't find any thoughts on this. I know the obvious answer is that they really want the coin but I was looking for some insightt on the whole ebay values. I'm just getting back into collecting after many years. I'm what is known on this forum as a OFEC collector. So my threshold for both coin condition and value is probably lower than many here. ebay seems to have somewhat of a bad reputation on this forum (maybe I'm misreading) but I've been pretty fortunate to get a number of coins over the last few months to fill in my OFEC collection. The problem I am having and it seems many others do as well, is locating those last 40 or so countries. ebay seems to be the only place I can even find some listed. I've been to a local show here in San Jose and most of the booths were focused on US and/or precious metal coins. I think I checked evry booth that had world coins and found only 13 of the 60 or so countries I was looking for. and it wasn't about price, they simply didn't have them...so back to ebay I go. I have a couple of pretty good online dealers that I have gotten a number of things from but again, they don't have the rarer countries at any price. I don't think I have a local coin shop here in San Jose that isn't completely focused on US and/or gold-silver. If I am wrong I would certianly like to hear about them. So, back to the ebay pricing. why are so many folks paying so much more than catalog for what to me would be a more common coin than the going price would indicate. perhaps the Krause catalogs are just not in tune with the market. I know this is the case for sports card collecting - Beckett has no clue what people are paying for cards! There doesn't seem to be many alternatives for collectors like me except ebay. Thanks for letting me vent and I hope this meets my FIRST quality post... Bill

1) They can get items that their local shop doesn't have in stock 2) They are redeeming ebay bucks and cash back (Bing) to bring the price down

I think it's "auction fever". The clock starts ticking down on that coin you have been looking at for a week and you start telling yourself, "I can raise my max bid a couple more dollars". Next thing you know its 50% to 200% higher than the price should be. Of course, there is the argument (with a fair amount a validity) that anything is worth what people will pay for it. As to your hard to find OFEC coins... I'm not sure which countries would fit into that "hard to find" list, but joelscoins.com has some "odd" stuff. And pretty decent prices, too. (At least I think so) Also, you might try typing up your want list and posting it in the "Wanted" section of CCF. (I think you need 50 posts for this, though?)

auction fever is right. Wow! sometimes I just marvel at what people pay.
I have actually bought from Joel - but in person at a show in January. Nice guy and his booth was packed. Hard to even get to - literally! I'm primarily intersted in 1901-2000 and a lot of his odd stuff is newer and not official coinage - nice stuff though - that is not a slam on Joel. And your right his prices are pretty good. I will be making an online purchase next month (when the funds gets replenised) from Joel

It's not just "auction fever" - it's certainly possible that the Krause values are completely wrong. The thing to look for is consistency. If you see coins that consistently sell for way over the "book price", then I would suspect an error in the catalogue (or ignorance on the part of the contributors). Example: for years, Krause was listing the Australia 2000 Victoria Cross dollar (KM# 493) at the issue price of $6, even when average ebay sale price was up to $200 or more. I understand the latest editions of the catalogue have finally corrected this. Actually completing an OFEC collection is tough, especially if you're like me and aren't prepared to hyperbid on ebay. I've been collecting OFEC since I was a kid, but as you can see from my wantlist in the Wanted section, there are still a dozen or so NCLT countries I haven't been able to get yet.

I've limited my objective to just 1901-2000 and then to only what I consider major changes within a 'country'. I can see easily how the collection could grow by expanding the years and getting into the provinces etc. When I reach my 50 posts, I will be excited to see if my want list produces any hits from the group. Until then I guess I need to just put up with ebay and maybe picking up one or two at a show if I get lucky. speaking of putting up with ebay, I think I have another topic to discuss...

Quote: so whats OFEC stand for? I would've liked to have said, "look it up in the glossary over in the Navigation links section"... but we haven't added an entry for "OFEC" to the glossary, yet. OFEC is an acronym for "one (coin) from every country" - the goal being to acquire (at least) one coin from every single coin-issuing country. An OFEC collector will usually limit themselves to a given time period, because trying to collect one coin from every country that has ever existed since coins were invented in 700 BC would be very challenging indeed.

Funny thing is I would have probably thought I was on a different forum b.c thats not the way things operate over here. Most members give you an answer instead of sending you on a hunt. Thanks for helping me though SAP
